TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, EPIIRAIM PARKER, of Marlow, county of Cheshire, and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful improvement in radiators or dampers, called the Self-Adjusting Damper. I do hereb decln re that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the constructionan il operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a top view of the damper.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my inventioml will proceed to describe its construc tion and operation. I
' Fig. 1 is a top view of the damper-in a horizontal position; it is composed of two metallic disks, the top w disk placed directlyover the lower one, and about an inch above it; these two disks are confined together at thejournals marked A A. Now if this damper be placed ina pipe of suitable size, and at right angles with the pipe, it will wholly fill the space, so that no smoke can escape past the damper. To give passage to the smoke I remove a portion of each disk upon opposite sides. In fig. 2, the part removed from the one is shown at C, andB shows the part removed from the other disk. The smoke will now pass the pipe; when it meets the lower disk the smoke will all be thrown upon one side and pass the lowerdisk at the opening B. The smoke will now cross over to the opposite side of the pipe, between the disks, and escape upward through the upper disk at' the opening C. This process will retard the smoke, and throw of much more heat than if passing upward unobstructed. To regulate the draught I place slide D, fig. 3, upon one of the disks, placing the slide an upon-the disk, and riveting them together at E, leaving the slide free to turn upon the rivet both outward and inward. also put a stop upon the plate or disk at G, fig. 1. Now, to use the damper, place it in a -vertical pipe of suitable sizc, rotating upon the journals A A, being vertical and parallel with the pipe, the slide heingin the upper section, the stove now has the full draught oi the pipe; turn the damper one-fourth round, and at right angles with the pipe, tit: slide being upon the plate towhich it is attached, the smoke wiilnow pass up on one side the pipe and through the lower plate, and cross over to the opposite side between the pin-tea and escape through the upperplnte at the opening 0. To close a part of the draught, tip down the side of the damper having the slide attached, till the slide will slide outward till it is checked by the stop G. Now bring it to a level, as before, and'the draught will be partly closed. To wholly close the draught bring thedampcr to a vertical position, the slide being upward. Now turn the damper three-quarters round ,'in the directionth'at when one quarter turnedthe slide will be on the bottom of the plate. In passing round the slide will slide outward, and will sag down and pass under the stop G, and t0 the circle of the pipe, and when three-quarters round the pipe will bewholly closed for the night. Turn it a quarter more, or a. full circle, and the stove has its full draught. Ialso place a spiral spring upon thejournal, between the thumb-piece and pipe at H, to give a slight friction to prevent the damper from rotating of itself. This damper will not fill with soot or get out of order, and makes a great saving of fuel.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,-is-
A damper made of two parallel plates or disks, whose edges are cut away at opposite sides, and to one of which is pivoted, hinged, or adjusted, near the side thu's cut away, a valveor slide, the whole device constructed so as tooperate substantially as described.
