WOODWORKING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 641,159, dated January 9, 1900.
Application filed October 25, 1898. Serial No. 694,524. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JOE SMITH and FRANK M. FOX, citizens of the United States, residing at Springville, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Woodworking-Machines, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to woodworking-machines; and the object thereof is to provide an improved attachment for use in connection with machines of this class, said attachment consisting of a detachable head for use in connection with the spindles or mandrels of such machines, said detachable head being provided with devices adapted to serve as a plain cutter and joiner or as a matcher and joiner and for cutting tongues and grooves in flooring and for other and similar purposes.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is an end view of a support or bench provided with a verticallymovable frame having a mandrel mounted therein, the upper end of which is provided with our improved mat-cher and joiner head; Fig. 2, a sectional side view thereof 3 Fig. 3, a side view of the improved matcher and joiner head which we employ arranged for forming grooves; Fig. 1, a similar view of the same device arranged for forming tongues; Fig. 5, a section of Fig. 4 on the line 5 5; Fig. 6, a side view of a screw-threaded hollow cylindrical sleeve which forms a part of the matcher and joiner head; Fig. 7, a bottom plan view of the device as shown in Fig. 3; Fig. 8, a top plan view thereof; Fig. 9, a plan view of the base disk or cutter of the cutter and joiner head. Fig. is a bottom plan view of an interchangeable top disk or cutter of the matcher and joiner head as shown in Fig. 3, said disk or cutter being adapted for use in making grooves; and Fig. 11, a view similar to Fig. 5, showing a modified form of construc tion.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of our improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in said drawings we have shown in Fig. 2 a part of a bench 12,which is provided at one end with a stationary vertical frame 13, which is provided at each side with vertical slots 14:, and we also employ a vertically-movable mandrel frame or support 15, which is connected with the vertical frame 13 by screws or bolts 16,
which are passed through the slots 14 and screwed firmly into the vertically-movable mandrel frame or support 15, and at the bottom of the stationary frame 13 is a bearing 17, through which passes a screw-threaded bolt 18, by means of which the vertically-movable mandrel frame or support 15 may be adjusted vertically, as desired.
Mounted centrally and vertically in the mandrel frame or support 15 is a mandrel 19, provided centrally with a power pulley or drum 20, and connected with the upper end of said mandrel 19, above the vertically-movable frame or support,is our improved matcher and joiner head 21.
The upper end of the mandrel 19 is screwthreaded, as shown at 22 in Fig. 5, and is provided with a nut 23, and mounted on the up per end of said mandrel and secured thereto by a screw 24 is a hollow cylindrical sleeve 25, which is provided adjacent to its lower end with a screw-thread 26 and at the upper end with an oppositely-arranged screw-thread 27, and the improved matcher and joiner head which consists of a plurality of parts, as 1 hereinafter described, is connected with. said sleeve.
In the construction of our improved com bination matcher and joiner head we provide a collar 28, which is adapted to be secured to the lower end of the sleeve and which is provided with a tubular extension 29, which is similarly threaded, and we also employ a base cutter 30 and an interchangeable top cutter disk or plate 31, above which is placed a collar 32, which is provided with a thread similar to the thread 27 on the upper end of the top sleeve 25.
The base cutter disk or plate 30 is circular in form, as shown in Fig. 9, said figure being a plan view thereof, and said cutter disk or plate is provided on its npper'side with two quadrant-shaped raised portions 33 of V less diameter than the disk or cutter, whereby two similar quadrant-shaped depressions 34 are formed, and at regular intervals in the perimeter of said cutter disk or plate are formed cavities or recesses 35, whereby the cutting teeth or edges 36 are formed, all of which project in the same direction.
In practice the matcher and joiner head is revolved in the direction in which the cutter teeth or edges 36 project, and the inner walls of the cavities or recesses 36 are preferably curved, as shown in Fig. 9.
The upper interchangeable cutter disk or plate 31 (shown in Fig. 10) is designed for use in cutting grooves and is provided on its lower surface with two quadrential raised portions 37, which are of greater diameter than the body portion of said disk or cutter and whereby two correspondingdepressions 38 are formed, and these parts correspond with the parts 33 and 34 of the base disk or cutter 30 and interlock therewith, and said disk or cutter is provided with notches or recesses 39 similar to the notches or recesses in the base disk or cutter 30, and whereby projecting cutting teeth or edges 40 are formed.
In the form of construction shown in Fig. 10 two of these cutting teeth or edges 40 are farther from the center of the disk or cutter than the other two, and those which are nearer the center of the disk or cutter are designed for planing the bottom of the groove formed thereby. These parts in practice are connected as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, the base disk or cutter 30 being mounted on the tubular extension 29 of the collar 28, as is also the top disk or cutter 31, and said parts are clamped together by the collar 32, and the top disk or cutter 31 is provided with screws or bolts 41, any desired number of which may be employed, said screws orbolts being passed therethrough and adapted to bear on the upper side of the base disk or cutter 30, so as to increase or diminish the width of the groove formed in the operation of the device.
By reason of the fact that the raised portions 37 on the bottom of the top disk orcutter 31 are radially wider than the body of said disk or cutter the said disk or cutter is provided with segmental sections 42, which project beyond the body thereof and in a lower plane, and the raised portions 33 on the upper surface of the bottom disk or cutter 30 are of less diameter than the body portion of said disk or cutter.
The construction hereinbefore described is, as stated, designed particularly for forming grooves, and in forming the corresponding tongues we employ a top disk or cutter 43, a side view of which is given in Fig. 4,and which is exactly of the shape and construction as the bottom disk or cutter 30, but preferably ofslightly less diameter, and said disk or cutter 43 is provided on its underside with raised portions which interlock with the raised portions 43 on the upper side of the bottom disk or cutter 30, and the disk or cutter 43 is also provided with cutting teeth or edges 44, similar to the cutting teeth or edges 36 on the bottom disk or cutter, and with the screws or bolts 41, which pass therethrough and by means of which the distance between the bottom disk or cutter 30 and the top disk orcutter 43 may be regulated. It will also be seen that the raised portions 33 011 the upper side of the bottom disk or cutter 30 are provided at one end with cutting teeth or edges 46,and in practice the corresponding parts of the top disk or cutter43 are similarly provided. WVe have not shown the top disk or cutter 43 in detail by reason of the fact that the construction on its under side is exactly the same as the construction of the bottom disk or cutter 30 on its upper side, and a detail illustration thereof is not, therefore, considered necessary. In Fig. 11 we have shown ourimproved matcher and joiner head, the details of which have been hereinbefore described, connected with an ordinary spindle, which takes the place of the mandrel heretofore described, and in this form of construction we substitute for the cylindrical hollow sleeve 25 a solid cylindrical attachment 55, into the lower end of which the mandrel 19 passes, said parts being connected by the set-screw 24, and otherwise this construction is similar to that hereinbefore described and clearly shown in Fig. 5. It will be apparent, however, that either of the forms of construction hereinbefore described may be used with the ordinary spindle or with a vertically movable mandrel and mandrelframe, and the words mandrel and spindles as used herein may each be considered as referring either to a spindle or mandrel as used in machines of the class referred to.
Having fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1.
