WILLIAM H. ARMSTRONG, OF N EW BRUNSWICK "NEW *JERSEY.
Letters Patent No. 64,059, dated April 28, 1867. i
tithe 5:11am: referrcttn it flgesi'fiettets giflntent nit mating and at its same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, YVILLIAM H. ARMSTRONG, of New Brunswick, in the countyof Middlesex, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and improved Combination of a Range and Air-Heating Furnace; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- V 'Figure 1 is a front view of my invention partly in section. V
Figure 2, a transverse vertical section of the same taken in the line xx, fig. 1.'
Figure 3, a horizontal section of the same taken in the line yy, fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention consists in arranging an upright range in a fire-place, in such a manner that the former may perform its legitimate functions of cooking, baking, lite, and at the same time be made to perform the function of an air-heater or furnace, and also as a water-heater.
The object of'the invention is to combine a range and air-heating furnace at a cost not materiallyexceeding that of the range alone, and economize in fuel by utilizing all'the heat radiated from the range.
A represents the lower part of an upright range. 13 the top plate, provided with the usual potholes a. C is the fire-grate, having a water-back, D, and EE are the air-passages, one at each side of the fire-grate. F G are ovens, placed one. over the other, and surrounded by a flue, H, and I is a warming-chamber above the oven Gr, having the flue H extending underneath it, the smoke pipe J communicating with H at the rear of the chamber I, as shown in fig. 2. The lower-end of flue H communicates with the fire-grate G. The range is not new in itself, being now in general use and giving perfect satisfaction. The range is fitted within a'fire-place, K, of masonry, the front portion of the lower part A of the range which contains the fire-grate 0 being in front of the fire-place, the part A extending the whole width of K, and also the warming-chamber I; flanges L extending from the ovens F G, to the sides of K, so as to completely fill up the front of the latter and form hot-air or air-heating chambers M M, at each side of the ovens,F G, the latter extending back to the rear wall of K. The warming-chamber I does not extend backward so far as the oven, and the space-at the rear of the latter forms a communication between the" upper parts of the chambers M M. NN are hot-air pipes leading from the upper parts of M M to the rooms or compartments to be heated; the cold air entering and passing through EE at each side of the fire-grate G, into the lower part of M M, and in its passage upward through the latter becoming heated. The lower parts of" the chambers M M areconnected, as there is a space underneath the door G, and this space has a coil of pipe, O, placed in it which communicates with the watewback D. This coil 6t pipe serves as an important auxiliary to'the water-back, increasing its heating surface very materially, as it is entirely within the hot-air chamber. The induction and eduction pipes are connected with the water-back as usual, and therefore do not require a special description. The lowerpart of the fiue H, at the rear of tho fire-grate C, rests upon an edge of masonry, a and additional supports may be employed if desired. Bythis arrangement it will be seen I combine an upright range and a hot-air, or air-heating furnace at a trifling expense, not materiallyexceeding the cost of the range alone. All the heat radiated from the range is utilized with the exception ofithat radiated directly from the front. I Havingthus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement of the cooking range and its appurtenances AB C F G, flue H, chambers IMVM, airpassages E E, water-back D, and auxiliary pipe 0, as herein described and for the purpose specified.
The above specification of ly invention signed by me this day of March, 1866.
Y WILLIAM H. ARMSTRONG.
