SPOKE- -FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 640,231, dated January 2, 1900. Application filed March 11, 1899. Serial No. 708,668. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
.Be it known that I, BOLING MINOR SADLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Burkville, county of Lowndes, and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spoke-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters and numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an improved fastening device for spokes, the object thereof being to provide an efficient and inexpensive means for repairing spokes with broken tenons and securing them to the wheel-felly without the necessity of removing the tire. The device is further applicable for securing a loose spoke and for tightening a loose tire without the necessity of removing and shrinking the same.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the annexed claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a vehicle-wheel having my improved device attached to one of the spokes thereof. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view, on an enlarged scale, taken on the line a: a: of Fig.1. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional elevation taken on the line y y of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is an end elevation of my improved fastener, showing the same in an open position detached from the spoke.
In the practice of my invention I provide a collar A, comprising two semicircular sections or segments a and a, these segments being supplied with inwardly-extended flanges a and a which are preferably beveled to admit of ready access between the end of the spoke and the wheel-felly. These said segments are also provided with extended lugs d and a which are riveted together by means of a rivet B when the device is attached around a spoke; but it is obvious that a screw may be substituted for the rivet, if desired. At a point diametrically opposite to the riveted portion of the device the two sections thereof are connected by any suitable hinge, as shown at 1; but it is obvious that another pair of lugs and a rivet or screw may he employed at this point in place of the hinge, and, further, the collar may be constructed from a single piece when it is desired to attach the same to the several spokes of a wheel during the process of manufacturing the same and before the wheel-felly is connected to the spokes. In every instance the collar is provided with oppositely-located jaws A for clamping the wheel-felly upon each side thereof, and these said-jaws preferably form an integral part of the collar.
In the operation and use of the device it is tightly secured around the outer end of the spoke, the flanged portions (1 and a being forced between the spoke end and the inner periphery of the wheel-folly, whereby should the tenon of the spoke be severed at a point 2, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, it is obvious that any swinging motion thereof is prevented and the spoke is as securely attached to the felly as it would be with an unbroken tenon. When the device is used as a means for tightening a loose tire, it is attached to any suitable number of spokes for the purpose of expanding the felly to a sufficient extent to make the same fit the tire tightly. It will be noted that these operations not only considerably strengthen the wheel, but the device can be attached successfully by an unskilled person, thus greatly facilitating and cheapenin g the process of repairing wheels.
Having thus described my said invention,- what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A fastening device for spokes comprising a collar for binding the outer end of the spoke, said collar having the inwardly-extending flange at its base for engagement between the spoke end and the wheel-telly, and the collar having also the op positely-located jaws extending beyond the basefianges and in a longitudinal plane with respect to the body of the collar and adapted to clamp the wheelfelly upon opposite sides thereof, substantially as shown and described.
2. Afasteningdeviceforspokescomprising a collar for binding the outer end of the spoke, said collar being composed of two sections or segments each of which is supplied with an inwardly-extending flange at its base for engagement between the spoke end and the flanges extended inwardly from their base 1'5 and jaws projected beyond the base-flange and in a longitudinal plane with respect to the body of the section, substantially as shown and described.
