UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB DANZ, 2D, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
PAIL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 649,979, dated May 22, 1900.
Application filed January 3, 1900. S rial N 218. (N0 modeL) To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB DANZ, 2d, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pails, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sheet-metal pails, its object being to provide a firmly-secured and mechanically-sealed cover therefor which can be readily removed without injury or impairment for future use either as an ordinary cover or as an independent utensil; and it consists in the features of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective elevation of myimproved pail, partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a sectional detail of the pail with the cover fitted thereon before sealing, and Fig. 3 is a similar detail of the parts after sealing.
In the drawings, A represents the pail, having a beaded or curled edge 2, and B the cover therefor, preferably a flat disk. The edge of the cover is upturned at right angles and then downturned to form an open fold or hem constituting a groove 5 of sufficient width to receive the curled edge of the pail. The flanged edge 3 of the cover extends downward and bears against the side of the pail, and the inner wall 6 of the groove 5 bears upon the inside of the pail, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The cover being fitted, as shown in Fig. 2, is secured in place and the pail mechanically sealed by crimping the exterior of the flange and the pail-body directly below the curled or beaded edge and substantially in a plane with the body of the cover, the shoulder formed by the uptnrning of the edge of the cover serving as an abutment or backing for the exterior crimp. The interlocking crimps 7 and 8 thus formed and the wall 6 of the groove then firmly grip or hold the beaded 0r curled edge of the pail and seal the vessel. The cover, however, can be sprung 01f the pail with a tool and can afterward be used, if desired, either as a cover or as a dish or utensil by itself.
I claim- 1. In combination a sheetlnetal pail having a curled 0r beaded edge, a cover therefor formed with an annular groove to receive the edge of the pail and havinga depending flange extending downward and bearing upon the outside of the pail, said flange being inwardly crimped into the pail-body below the edge, and serving with the inner wall of the groove to grip the edge of the pail and seal the same.
2. In combination a sheet=metal vessel of the class described having a curled 0r beaded edge, a cover therefor having an annular groove of sufiicient' depth to wholly receive said beaded edge so that the body of the cover is below the same, and having a flange extending below the cover and closely fitted to the exterior of the vessel, the body of the pail beneath the edge being closely gripped between the flange and the inner wall of said groove by the inward crimping of said flange, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JACOB DANZ, 2D.
