FTJZABETIT M. TOWNSEND, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
LORGNETTE AND EYEGLASS CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 649,421, dated May 8, 1900. Application filed eptember 15,1899. Serial No. 730,617. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatl, ELIZABETH M. TOWN- SEND, a citizen ofthe United States of America, residing at Denver, .in the county of Arapahoe and-State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Lorgn'ette and Eyeglass (Jase; and
I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompany-ingdrawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in a combined lorgnette and eyeglass case; and it consists of the features hereinafter described and claimed, all of which will be fully understood byreference to the accompanying drawings, in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of the complete device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a top view of the case, shown in detail. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view of the handle. Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line X X, Fig. 1,. the parts being shown on a larger scale. Fig. 6 is a section taken on the line Y Y, Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a section taken on the line Z Z, Fig. 1, the parts being very much enlarged. Fig. 8 is a section taken on the line X X Fig. 1. Fig. 9 is a fragmentary perspective view of the case.
Similar reference characters indicating corresponding parts in the views, let the numeral 5 designate the case, whose extremities-'13, conform to the general shape of eyeglasslenses and are open, as shown at C, to expose the lenses when the eyeglassesare in place, whereby the device is adapted for use as a lorgnette, the handle 0 being applied to one extremity thereof, as hereinafter explained. Each extremity B of the case is composed of two thin narrow bands 5, surrounding the opening 0 and separated by a narrow space adapted to receive the lens portions of the eyeglasses. These bands 5 of each part B are connected by an edge wall 5*, which is open at the top, asshown at E, to permit the insertion of the eyeglasses, one of the parts beias provided with a hinged lid 8, which when closed locks the eyeglasses in placewitliin the case. The two rear bands 5 0f the parts 13 are connected by a center part 5. Opposite the part 5 are formed two slots D, which are separated by a small plate 5, attached to the edge wall intermediate the extremities B. The upper extremity of the plate 5 is connected with the part 5 bya pin 5". Two reinforcing-pins 5 also connect the front and rear bands adjacent the'slots B. These pins support the front bands and prevent them from being crowded inwardly. The spaces D are adapted to receive the guards of the eyeglasses, which are indicated by dotted lines in Figs. 1, 3, and S.
v The upper part of the handle 6 is provided with two spring-arms 6, terminating in jaws 6, normally open, as shown in Fig. 4, but which are made to grasp the case by moving a slid e 9 upwardly on the arms to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2. These jaws are-provided with teeth 6, adapted to enter counter- .part openings 6, formed in the rim of the case at one extremity. 3y moving the slide 9 down wardly the handle may be readily detached from the case. The handle is also provided with a small-change receptacle 7, having a hinged cover 7. This feature will be found convenient fo carrying car-fare change.
Having thus'described .my invention, what I claim is-.-
1. An eyeglass-case having two extremities B B suitably connected'and each composed of two narrow parallel bands 5 surroundinglensopenings and connected by an edge wall open on top to receive a pair of eyeglasses.
2. An eyegass-case having two extremities B B suitably connected and each composed of two narrow parallel bands 5 surrounding openings 0 adapted to expose the eyeglasslenses on both sides, the bands 5 of each ex tremity being connected by an edge wall 5* open on top to receive a pair of eyeglasses, audsuitabie means for locking the eyeglasses in place.
3. An eyeglasscase having two extremities B B suitably connected, each being composed of two narrow bands 5 su rrounding lens-openings and connected by an edge wall 5 open on top to receive a pair of eyeglasses, and suit able means forloeking the eyeglassesin place, rating guardopehings formed. in the front of 10 comprising a movable vlid adapted to partly the ease opposite the'part 5. close said top opening. In testimony whereof I afiix my signature 4. An eyeglass-case having two extremities in presence of two witnesses.
B B each composed oi two narrow bands 5 r r1 T surrhunding lens-openings and connected by ELI/ABE PH W SEND an edge wall 5* open on top to receive a pair 1 -Witnesses:
of eyeglasses, the two rear bands 5 being con- ISHAM R. IIOWZE,
neeted by a part 5; and a email plate 'S0pt GRACE MYTENGER.
