IMPROVED ANCHOR-STOCK.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, JOHN L. HANLY, of San Francisco, San Francisco coun'ty, State of California, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Anchor-s, and I do hereby declare the following description l and accompanying drawingsl are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the artjor science to which it mostV nearly appertains to make and use my said invention without further invention or experiment.

The nature of my invention is to provide an improved anchor-stock, in which I have succeeded in obviating the evil of breaking off at the point where thekey passes through to secure'it to the shank.

In order to accomplish this 'I make a key-way in one sideof the opening in the shank through which the stock passes, and weld on the stock a flange at such a distance from the shoulderas to let the stock turn after the flange has passed entirely through. By turning the' stock one-fourth or more of the circumference a keyway through the shoulder is brought into a line withv the one in the shank, so that a key may be inserted to'keep. the shank and stock in their relative positions. A key-way, a, is out in the opening B. rlhe stock C is constructed with the shoulder b in the ordinary manner, but has a permanent flange, c, welded to it longitudinally. This flange takes the place ofthe pin or key usually put through the stock at that place, and which weakens it materially by taking away the 'metal from a point Where strength is most necessary. -The shoulder IJ has a key-way, el, out through it at right angles with the position of the flange e on the stock, and parallel with the flange.

` The flange c is placed at a distance from the shoulder b equal to the thickness `of the shank, so that after passing entirely through the key-way a it allows the -stock to be turned till the key-way ci is in a line with a, when a key, D, is inserted, which holds the stock rmly in its place. The permanent ilange c welded to the stock increases the strength at a point Where it is most liable to break, for when the anchor falls with the end E down, as soon as the vessel drayrs ou it that end will bind as the lower fluke begins to take hold, and when the stock is fastened by a key through it, it is very much' weakened, and will be very liable to bend or break at that point. The* other side will be strong enough on account of the shoulder Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-f- An anchor-stock C, in combination with the permanent Harige e and movable key D, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
