VVILLAM I-I. CORNELL, OF BROOKINGS, SOUTH DAKOTA.
HOSE AND GARMENT SUPPORTER.
u SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 647,477, dated April 1'7, 1906.
Application iilcd May 25, 1899. Serial No. 718,174. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM H. CORNELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brookings, in the county of Brookings and State of South Dakota, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Hose and Garment Supporters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain novel improvements in hosiery and garment supporters, and more particularly to that class of which the Letters Patent No. 576,659, granted to me on the 9th day of February, A. D. 1897, may be taken as a type; and the object is to simplify and improve the construction and increase the eliiciency and practical utility of the device.
To this end the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure lis a plan view of my improved su pporter or hosiery-clasp. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the members separated. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the members. Fig. 4L is a longitudinal section, on an enlarged plan, showing the manner of securing the clasp to the edge of the garment.
As illustrated in Fig. 1, the male member consists of a wire loop A, the upper end of which terminates in a strap-eye l to receive the loop 2 of the strap fabric 3, which is held in place by the bar or brace 4, connecting the parallel sides of the loop member. These sides converge to form theshoulders 5 5 and the shank 6, which turns inwardly at an approximate right angle to the body portion and then terminates in an eye 7, lying parallel with lout in a different plane from that of the body portion.
B denotes the female member, which constitutes the receiving-link, one end of which is formed with an eye S to receive the loop 9 of the strap fabric 3, and its other end is formed with a somewhat similar loop l0, to which the looped end 12 of the strap fabric 3 is secured, the side edges of the fabric being stitched together to form a pocket 13 and also a guard or shield for the eye 7 of the male member. The sides of this link B project inwardly, so as to leave a passage-way between them for the shank 6 of the loop A.
In operation the edge of the garment is laid over the link B and the eye 7 pushed through the loop 10, carrying the fold of the garment with it into the pocket 13. The male member is now pulled forward, carrying the fold of the garment which encompasses the eye 7 through the passage-way formed between the contracted sides of the link B until the shank 6 abuts against the fold of the strap fabric encompassing the eye 8. A reversal of this operation separates the members and releases the garment.
The accompanying drawings show my invention in the preferable forms now known to me 5 but many changes in the details might be made within the skill of a good mechanic .Without departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth in the claim at .the end of this specification. h
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the. United States, is-
In a gar1nent-supporter, the combination kwith the male member consisting of a wire loop A, the upper end of which terminates in a strap-eye for the reception of the loop of the strap fabric; the bar or brace 4 connecting the parallel sides of said loop member, said sides converging to form the shoulders 5 5, and the shank 6 turned inwardly at approximately right angles to the body portion, and terminating in an eye 7 lying parallel with, but in a diiferent plane from that of the body portion; of the female member constituting a receivinglink, one end of which is formed with an eye to receive the loop of the strap fabric, and the other end being formed with a loop 10, the strap fabric 3 secured to the loop 10, the side edges of the strap fabric being stitched together to form a pocket and shield for the eye 7 of the male member of.
the supporter, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM II. CORNELL.
Witnesses:
