Description
UNITED STATES PATENT @EEICE.
ALBERT S. NEWBY, OF CHANUTE, KANSAS.
COMPOUND FOR COATING INCANDESCENT MANTLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 646,232, dated March 27, 1900.
Application filed December 5,1899. Serial No. 739,325. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT S. NEWBY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ohanute, in the county of Neosho and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Compound for Coating Incandescent Mantles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in a coating or dip for incandescent mantles to enable them to be transported without danger of being broken or damaged.
I have found by various experiments that there is great objection to coatings that have formerly been used on account of their drawing the mantle out of shape when drying, also causing it to crack when the coating is being burned off at the time the mantle is placed in position for use. My coating obviates all of these objections, inasmuch as when it is removed it toughens the ash, and the mantle is left a great deal stronger than before the coating was put on. The ingredients used in my invention also increase the light-giving power of the mantle to at least twenty-five per cent. more than can be obtained from the same mantle before the coat-ing is applied.
In carrying out my invention I proceed as follows: Itake three ounces of guncotton and place it in a glass bottle, adding thereto fiftyfive ounces of ether, preferably commercial sulfuric other. This mixture is allowed to stand about fifteen minutes and is shaken from time to time. I also mix separately fifty ounces of alcohol, preferably wood-alcohol, with four ounces of glycerin. The two solutions or mixtures are then thoroughly mixed together under agitation lasting about five minutes. The compound is then ready for use in the customary manner and should be applied cold, care being taken to shake the liquid well before using it.
It will be understood that the proportions stated above may be varied within certain limits Without departing from the nature of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. As an improved article of manufacture,
the coating liquid for incandescent mantles, composed of three ounces of guncotton, fiftyfive ounces of sulfuric ether, fifty ounces of Wood-alcohol, and four ounces of glycerin, as specified. I 2. The herein-described compound for coating incandescent mantles, said compound being a liquid consisting of ether, alcohol, guncotton and glycerin, in about the proportions specified.
