A, WILDER, of the city of Detroit, inthe county ofwayne, andState of Michigan, have invented a new and improved Machine for Planing and Otherwise Preparing Lumb'er'; and I do hereby declare that the following isla full and exact description of. the same,'rei`erence being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of`this specication, and i'n which like parts are indicated bylilze letters in the several i figures.- v
The natureiof my invention consists 'in so constructing a planing machine, that .at 'the same time itwill -l tongue and groove, bead, rebate, and splitA lumber at one andthe same operation, making two pieces of dressed and finished Hooi-ing or ceiling out of one piece of-lumber without the uscof a saw.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction :Figure- 1 is a plan view of my machine. Figure 2, hn elevation of the same. Other parts represented will be mentioned hereafter.

The beltfpasses over apulley,fl, on axis of whichis-a cog-wheehg, which gears into a larger one, g', which is on an arbor or shaft, L. Ou the opposite side from g', and on the same shaft, there is a cog-wheel, z', which gears into another cog-wheel, z", it gearing into another one, which is on a shaft, h. On' the shafts L and Il are `bevel-wheels E which gear ,int-o Ahorizontal bevelwheels E above, operatingthe luted feed-rollersvj.v Other bevel-wheels on the same shaft connect with horizontal ones which operate the secondaryfeed-ro1-lers r.
These duplicate sets of feedrollers are vmade adjustable above in any ordinary manner, as shown, and more especially below through the bevel-wheels E and E. The former sliding on its shaft h or L gives way to the pressure ou the luted rollers j through the bevel cog-wheels E on the lower extremity of their shafts. 4This adjustable arrangemcntgwhich is automatic, I consider of great importance. ll are adjustable guides, throngh `which passes4 the lumber to the feed-rollers jj andl.: le. v m is an, endless 'chain by whichv to regulate the cutting depth of the planing or rebating and togueing or beading cutter-head n. Between fthe feed-rollers and the cutter nis an adjustable roller, n,-made so hy.a set-screw, o, by which to press the boards against the fixed plate p, against which it bears when the cutter n operates on it. As the board passes along, and before reach-v ing the second tongueing-cutter nf', which-maltese. double tongue on tho opposite side like n dogs, it bearsl against another pressureplate,p, supporting it in this second operation; thisplate p being made adjustable by a l'set-screw, o.
