Description
@nini faire atrat @Hita JOHN H. l THOMAS, PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA. Letters Patent o. 64,597, dated llfay 7 1867. l
IMPROVEMENT IN WINDOW-FRAMES.
To ALL wHoM IT MAY coNcERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN I-I, THOMAS, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an improvement in Window-Frames; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the'same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawing and to the lettersol` reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to an improvement in the side-pieces'oi` window-frames; the said improvement con` sisting in making each side-piece of two strips, grooved and connected together, substantially as described hereafter, so that -it can be made more expeditiously and at less cost, and may be more permanent and durable than those of the ordinary construction. ,3
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make my invention, I will now proceed to describe the construction of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a transverse sectionof one of my improved side-pieces for window-frames.
Figure 2, a .sectional view, showing the parts of which the side-pieceis composed, detached from each other; and
Figure 3, an inside view of part of one ofthe side-pieces.
The improved sidepiece is composed of two sections a a', secured together by ordinary appliances, and
retained in their proper relative position by strips or dowels c c; the latter fitting into grooves in the adjacent faces ofthe two sections, as shown in iig. 1. In the inner. side of the section a are semicircular recesses e e, which coincide with similar recesses inv the adjacent side of the section4 a', two cylindrical chambers z az being thus formed for the reception of the usual balance weights which are connected to the ropes attached to the sashes in the usual manner. In the outer face of the section Va are recesses z'z','in which t the usual guiding strips h h for the sashes.` The side-pieces of ordinary window-frames consist of .long narrow boxes which are composed of a number of strips, demanding, in properly fitting and securing together,- much tedious manipulation, which is obviated in my improvement. The several grooves in the Atwo sections a and a may be readily cut in one machine and at one operation from the solid wood, and the two pieces, when sccured'together, form va much more permanent and substantial side-piece-than one constructed of several strips. The grooves e e may be V-shaped or square, and the two sections a a may be connected together without the use of the strips c c, if desired. i
I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A side-piece for a window-frame, consisting of two sections or strips a a, grooved, and connectedtogether, substantially as set forth for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereot` I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses,
JOHN H. THOMAS.'
Witnesses:
CHARLES E. FOSTER, JOHN WHITE.
