Description

No. 645,269. .Patented Mar. l3, I900.
B. G. MORGAN.
PLUMB LEVEL.
(Application filed Apr. 19, 1899.)
(No Model.)
' UNITED STATES BENNETT G. MORGAN, OF CONNELLSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
PLUMB-LEVEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 645,26 9, dated March 13, 1900.
Serial No. 713,646. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENNETT O. MORGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Connellsville, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Combination Plumb and Level, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is anew and useful construction of level intended for use in place of the ordinary spirit-level.
The object of the invention is to provide an extremely cheap and simple device which can be used either as a level or a plumb-bob.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of the various parts and in their novel combination and arrangement, all of which will be fully described, and hereinafter pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a view showing a level constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a horizontal longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 4 is'a detail-view of the blank from which the gage and support for the indicator are formed. Fig. 5 is a view showing the said blank properly folded and ready for insertion into the stock.
In carrying out my invention I employ a wooden stock A, which is constructed substantially the same as the stock of an ordinary spirit-level, and at its center is formed a circular opening, in which is fitted a gageband 13, having the degrees marked thereon for the purpose hereinafter explained. The band B has laterally-projecting ears B at the center and oppositely-arranged laterally-projecting ears B at each end. After the stock is bent to form a circular band the ears B and B are bent outwardly, as shown in Fig. 5, and are provided with perforations by means of which said circular band can be secured within the circular opening in the stock, the degrees marked being produced upon the inner face of the band. The band is also provided with inwardly-projecting arms B in which is journaled the arbor O of the pointer or indicator D, said pointer or indicator always hanging in a vertical position and being preferably weighted by passing a bolt D through the distal end thereof and screwed into D upon the opposite side of the indicator or pointer. In this manner the distal or free end of the pointer is made heavier than the other end, thereby insuring prompt and efficient action. The disks E, which are made of celluloid or glass, are arranged upon each side of the band and are held in place by means of the bezels F, which are screwed to the stock at the edges of the circular opening.
When the device is used as a level, the indicator will point to zero whenever the surface tested is level, and in case the said surface is not level the indicator will point to one side or the other of the zero-mark and indicate the number of degrees of theinclination of the surface.
In case the device is used as a plumb the indicator should point to ninety degrees whenever the surface is perpendicular, and in case the said surface is not perpendicular the pointer will show the number of degrees of inclination one way or the other.
It will thus be seen that I provide an exceedingly cheap, simple, and efficient construction of combination plumb and level and one in which the parts are not liable to get out of order.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A combination plumb and level comprising a stock having acentral opening, agraduated band arranged within the said opening, said band having oppositely-disposed ears for fastening the band within the stock, and oppositely-disposed arms, the arbor -or shaft journaled in the said arms, and the pointer or indicator depending from the said arbor, substantially as shown and described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a gageband for plumb-levels, comprising an elongated graduated strip, on the respective ends of which are oppositely-disposed ears, oppositely-disposed ears intermediate the ends of said strip and oppositely-disposed arms positioned between the center and each end, substantially as described.
