SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 645,244, dated March 13, 1900. Applic tion filed June 15,1899. Serial No. 720,607. (No model.)

Be it known that we, J AMES G. WOODRUFF and THOMAS W. R. MOOABE, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Winsted, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Clocks, of which the following is a description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a front or face view of parts embodyin g said improvement with the clock-dial removed. Fig. 2 is a sectional View of the same parts shown in Fig. 1, with the clock-dial present, on the plane denoted by the dotted line :10 at. Fig: 3 is a face view of a portion of what is shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a view in section of what is shown in Fig. 3 on the plane denoted by the dotted line.
The object of the improvement is the production of parts and mechanism for attaching a clock-dial and clock-movement to a clock-case front in a novel manner, with certain resulting advantages.
In the accompanying drawings the letter a denotes a portion of a clock-case face. These clook-cases, or at least the clock-case fronts, are often made of earthenware, in the firing of which the openings in the clock-case fronts are caused to vary somewhat in size and contour. Furthermore, these clock-case fronts vary in thickness. The improvement described herein permits the clock-dial and other parts to be adjusted centrally of the opening in the clock-case front. It also permits the clock-dial and other parts to be properly fastened in and adjusted to clock-case fronts of different thicknesses, and it also permits the clockwork-frame, which carries the movement, to be adjusted toward and from the clock-face.
The letter 1) denotes a ring, which may well be made of ductile sheet metal, which overlaps the opening in the clock-case front and also overlaps the margin of that opening on the face of the clock-case front. It is provided with extensions 0, preferably integral with the ring, which extend backward through the opening. The letter cl denotes screws carried by these extensions, bearing against the wall of the opening in the clock-case front,
by means of which the said ring can be adjusted centrally in the opening of the said clock-case front. It will be readily understood that by this mention of adjusting-screws it is intended to cover the equivalents thereof. The clock-dial e is attached to the ring already mentioned by means which will be described, so that when this ring is adjusted centrally of the opening in the clock-case front the dial is similarly adjusted.
Although the dial is denoted by a single letter, it maybe made up of one piece or of a plurality of pieces, the latter being the preferable thing in the clock construction of to-day.
The letter f denotes another ring, which overlaps the opening in the clock-case front and also the margin thereof on the back of said clock-case front. The extensions 0 from the front ring Z) project through mortises in the rear ringf and at the back of said ringf may be given a torsional twist as indicated in the drawings, which of itself tends to hold the two rings in attachment with each other.
The letter '9 denotes headed screws, which run fromvthe dial e to and through the rear ring f. It will be readily understood that by means of these screws the two rings b andf can be made to embrace the clock-case front as tightly as desired, and at the same time the dial will be practically attached to the front ring I).
The letter 7t denotes the clock-movement frame as a whole. The movement is not shown; but it will be readily understood that it is carried in this fame.
The letter denotes screw-threaded posts extending from the frame h to and through the rear ring f, being there provided with nuts 70 and Z, cooperating With the two faces of the ring last mentioned. 13y manipulating these nuts the clock-movement can be adj usted toward and from the clock-case front, as desired.
We claim as our improvement 1. In combination the clock-case front with opening therein, the ring overlapping said opening and the margin thereof on the face of said clock-case front, the extensions from said ring through said opening, the screws adapted for adjusting said ring in its central relation to said opening, the clock-dial, and means for attaching said dial to said ring, all substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination, the clock-case front with suitable opening therein, the ring overlapping said opening and the margin thereof on the face of said clock-case front, the ring, overlapping said opening and the margin thereof on the back of said clock-case front, the extensions from the ring first mentioned projecting through mortises in the ring last mentioned, the screws adapted for adjusting both of said rings in their central relation to said opening, the clock-dial, and means for attaching said dial to said ring first mentioned all substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
3. In combination, the clock-case front with suitable opening therein, the ring overlapping said opening and the margin thereof on: the face of said clock-case front, the ring' overlapping said opening and the margin thereof on the back of saidclock-case front, the extensions from the ring first mentioned projecting through mortises in the ring last mentioned, the screws adapted foradj'nsting.
