UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB POST, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVED LOCK FOR FIRE-ARMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 6,453, dated May 15, 1849.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB Posr, of the town of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Method of Discharging Fire-Arms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof.
The nature of my invention and improvement consists in attaching to or manufacturing with any gun or pistol, or any gun or pistol lock which operates upon the sotermed self-cocking principle, the sear a, acting in combination with the set or tumbler b and the adjustable set or tumbler screw c,,or its equivalent, the effect of each and all of which is described hereinafter, reference beinghad to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention,I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
1 take a self-cockingpistol organ of any approved fashion, but more particularly of the form shown in the accompanying drawing, and in the trigger or cockinglever of the lock 'thereof I insert the sear a, and in combination therewith, and immediately behind and beneath said sear a, the set or tumbler b, and also in the stock or handle of said gun or pistol I insert from beneath and immediately in rear of said cocking-lever the adjustable sct'or tumbler screw or its equivalent, the end whereof I cause to projectinward and upward from the inside of said stock, and in a mortise in said trigger or cocking-lever I insert and secure by means of a pin or screw near the point (I the hammer of said lock; and the ett'ect of such arrangement of the sear a, the set I), and the screw 0, or other device for tripping the set b,and through it the sear a, is as follows: The trigger or cocking-lever being drawn back to its full extent causes the lowest part of the set I) to pass and drop in rear of the top of the screw 0, or other device for similar purpose, and while the trigger or lever is held thus extended the hammer will be retained; but by allowing the trigger to move toward the muzzle of the piece the set b,comiug in contact with the screw 0, orits equivalent, is tipped or tumbled, and by its action on the rear part of the sear a, throwing that up and the forward portion of the same down, the hammer is disengaged and the piece discharged, and the hammer being within said trigger or cookinglever near the point (Z it receives the direct action of the mainspring, which operates at the same time in returning the said trigger or lever to the position it occupies when the piece has been discharged.
I do not claim the invention of a scar, nor the hanging together of the hammer and trigger (or cocking-lever;) but What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the sear a, the set or tumbler b, and the set or tumbler screw 0, or its equivalent, whether the same be adjustable or not, the whole acting substantially in the manner and for the purpose hereinbefore described.
