GEORGE WATT, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
Letters Patent 1V0. 64,464, dated Bldg 7, 136T.
on Srirebnln nfrmh In in tlusc 53mins atint mm lllillilll' m it ill!) time.
u u l! u TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, GEORGE lVATT, of Richmond, in the county of Henrico, and State of Virginia, have invented a. new and useful improvement in Plough-Handles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are made -part of this specification, and in which my improvement is represented by a longitudinal sectional view.
To avoid the necessity of bending the stuli to make the handle a. bent socket is provided, which forms the curve, and may be made to unite the post with the portion grasped by the hand.
It is difficult to find a sufficient quantity of stuff with a natural bend, and it is daily becoming more (lifiieult to find good stufi'ito bend. By my improvement I am able to make a thoroughly good handle of straight stuff by making a bent socket, which may be made to form a hand-hold, or into which the ends of the respective wooden portions are secured.
This handle is made by having that part of it, B, from the bend downward, of the ordinary size and of the ordinary kind of timber, shaped, as is customary, to suit such particular kind of plough for which itis intended. The bent port of it, A, as will be seen, is made in a separate piece, of cast iron or other metal, of such form as may suit the taste of the maker, either of a round or oval form, and is mil-dc hollow, to receive the upper end of that part of the handle below the bend, with a. rivet or screw to hold it fast to its place. The bent port A may serve as a hand-hold without wood at its end, or it may have a. piece, a, of any kind of wood extending back of it, to form a hand-hold in the rear of the metal. Thus made, the bent part of it, being separate, may be applied to many handles successively, as they wear out or break, and enables the farmer to replace his handles himself whenever needed.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The curved metallic socket A, constructed as described, and employed for the purpose specified.
