GIDEON SIBLEY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
ARM-REST FOR DENTAL CHAIRS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 644,643, dated March 6, 1900.
Original application filed January 12, 1896, Serial No. 576,452. Divided and this application filed J'uly28, 1899. Serial No. 725,339, (NO model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GIDEON SIBLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Arm-Rests for Dental Chairs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
The present application is a division of the application filed by me January 12, 1896, Serial No. 576,452, for certain improvements in dental chairs.
The subject of this case relates to the armrests of dental and other chairs, my object being to provide a simple and efficient construction whereby the said rests may be laterally adjustable in respect to the seat to meet particular requirements and whereby they may be readily applied to or removed from the seat, as occasion may require, as will be hereinafter particularly described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a dental chair embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through one of the arm-rests and its supporting parts as on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation of one of the arm-rests detached. Fig.
4 is a detail in elevation of the arm-rest-supporting bar and sector on the seat-base. Fig. 5 is a plan thereof.
A represents the seat, and B the arm-rests. The posts I) of the latter are provided at their lower ends with hoods 67 which embrace sectors 68, formed on or affixed to the respective sides of the seat-base a. These hoods are provided with depending boxes 69, which are mounted on horizontallydisposed bars 7 O, fixed in appropriate bosses on the sides of the seat, to the end that the arm-rests may be swung laterally in respect to the seatthat is, bodily toward and from each other.
Fitted to a guideway in each of the posts, directly above the underlying sector, is a spring-actuated pin 71, which is adapted to register with any one of a series of sockets 72 in the sector, and thus lock the arm-rest in a predetermined position of adjustment. The pin is provided on its upper end with a ring or handle 7 3, by means of which it may be retracted against the pressure of the spring,
so as to release the arm-rest and permit the adjustment thereof. The sides of each of the bars are flattened, and one side of each of the boxes is open, as at 74, similarly to a hook, so that if the opening be applied to the lower edge of the bar and the arm-rest be swung upwardly the latter will be maintained upon the bar. To detach the arm-rest bodily from the bar, it is merely requisite to disengage the pin from the sector, draw the arm-rest forward until the opening in the box is above the upper edge of the bar, and then lower the arm-rest.
I claim 1. In a chair, the combination with a seat, of arm-rests, horizontal pivot-supports therefor whereby said rests may be bodily swung toward and from each other, locking devices mounted onsaid arm-rests and bodily movable therewith, and stationary means about which said devices turn and with which they coact to secure the said arm-rests in positions of adjustment, substantially as described.
2. In a chair, the combination with a seat provided with laterally-arranged socketed sectors, of pivoted arm-rests, and means thereon to engage the sockets in the sectors, and thereby lock the arm-rests in predetermined positions of lateral adjustment, sub stantially as described.
3. In a chair, the combination with a seat provided with laterally-arranged horizontal bars thereon, of arm-rests provided with open hook-like pivot-boxes adapted to be mounted on said bars, and means for securing said arm-rests in positions of lateral adjustment, substantially as described.
4. In a chair, the combination with a seat provided with laterally-arranged sectors and supporting-bars, of arm-rests provided with hoods and boxes adapted to be applied to said sectors and bars respectively, and means in said hoods to engage the sectors and lock the arm-rests in positions of lateral adjustment, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GIDEON SIBLEY.
Witnesses:
ANDREW V. GRoUPE, JOHN R. NOLAN.
