Description

Patented Mar. 6, I900.
,- J. ,C. ALEXANDER.
PORTABLE FENCE. (Application filed 98c. 27, 1899.)
(No Model.)
A ltorney UNITED STATES PATENT @Fiucn.
JAMES CANTRY ALEXANDER, OF FORT MITCHELL, ALABAMA.
PORTABLE FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 644,564, dated March 6, 1900.
Application filed October 2 '7, 1 89 9.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES CANTRY ALEX- ANDER, a resident of Fort Mitchell, in the county of Russell and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Fences; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such .as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in portable fences, one object of the invention being to so construct a series of panels or sections of fence that they can be readily secured together in position to form a fence and which can be readily separated and removed and conveyed from place to place.
A further object is to provide a portable fence with improved means for securing the same in place and which can be packed in a small space for shipment.
With these objects in View the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View in elevation, illustrating my improvements; and Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are detail views.
A A represent a series of panels or fencesections, each consisting of a pair of parallel uprights 1 at each end and aseries of rails 2, connecting said uprights and secured at their ends between uprights of the respective pairs. Transversely-disposed blocks 3 are secured to the uprights, below the lowest rail 2, to form supports for the panel or fence-section, each block being notched for the accommo dation of the lowest rail.
Vertical parallel bars 4 are secured to the rails 2 near their central portions, and said vertical bars are connected at their upper and lower ends by means of cross-bars 5, said bars 4 and 5 thus forming a pocket for the reception of a flat post 6, adapted to be driveninto the ground to assist in supporting each fencesection or panel. The rails2project between the uprights 1 only about half the width of the latter-,fand when two sections of fence are placed end to end a passage will be formed Serial No. 735,000. (No model.)
for the reception of fiat post 7, which is driven into the ground, and, together with the posts 6, heretofore referred to, will securely hold the sections of fence together and anchor them to the ground. One upright of each pair of parallel uprights 1 is preferably made longer than the other, and a Wire 8 is secured at its ends to said longer uprights, thus completing a most attractive fence.
It will be seen that when it is desired to move the fence, from one place to another it is simply necessary to pull up the posts 6 and 7, when the sections or panels A can be placed side by side and if shipped in a wagon can be placed in an upright position, supported on the blocks 3, and hence occupy buta small space.
Various slight changes might be resorted to in the general form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the s irit and scope of my invention, and hence would have it understood that I do not wish to limit myself to the precise de tails set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A portable fence comprising several abutting sections, each section comprising several parallel rails, two parallel uprights secured at each end of the series of rails and projecting at their outer vertical edges beyond said rails, the parallel uprights of one section abutting against the parallel uprights of the adjacent section so as to forma pocket between the two sections, and posts inclosed and guided in said pockets throughout the lengths of the latter and adapted at their lower ends to be driven into the ground.
2. A fence comprising a series of portable sections, each section having parallel uprights projecting at their edges beyond the body of the section to which they are secured, the uprights of adjacent sections abutting and forming pockets at the juncture of the sections, posts passing through and guided in said pockets, bars secured to and project- In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing, witnesses.
JAMES GANTRY ALEXANDER.
