TEDRICK D. BENDURE AND JOSEPH S. BENDURE, OF LONDON, OHIO.
SAM PLE-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 633,781, dated September 26, 1899.
Application filed March 8, 1899. Serial No. 708,186. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, TEDRICK D. BEN- DURE and JosErH S. BENDURE, citizens of the United States, residing at London, in the county of Madison and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sample-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to the improvement of sample holding and displaying devices, and has particular relation to devices for holding and displaying samples of dry goods.
The objects of our invention are to provide a neat, simple, and effective device for holding and displaying samples of textural fabrics and admitting of the same being drawn out of the holder and cut off in such lengths as may be desirable, to so construct and arrange the parts of said device as to adapt it for insertion within a bolt of goods corresponding with the sample, and to produce other improvements in details of construction and arrangement of parts, which will be more fully pointed out hereinafter. These objects we accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in WlllCll- Figure 1 is a view in perspective of our improved holding device. Fig. 2 is a detail view in perspective of the outer end portion of the same. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section, and Fig. it is a view in perspective of a bolt of goods having our improved sample-holder supported therein.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In carrying out our invention we employ an oblong holding device, the body 1 of which consists of a strip of sheet metal or other similar material, said strip being doubled or fold- 3 ed slightly beyond the center of its length to result in the production of upper and lower plates or leaves, such as are indicated at 2' and 3, these upper and lower members being parallel with each other. The rear portion of the upper member is, as indicated at 4, preferably raised to a greater distance above the lower member than the forward portion thereof. As indicated at 5, the base orlower member of the holder is provided with upturned or flanged sides, these sides, in conjunction with the upper and lower members of the device, forming substantially an oblong boxing-casing. The forward end of the lower member of the holder, as shown, is turned upward, said upturned portion having its sides doubled or bent to form keepers, within which is adapted to be held a card or indicator-plate 6, on which may be marked the price, name, or quality of the goods contained in the holder. As shown at 7, the upper member 3 of the holder is in its forward portion preferably provided with two or more parallel slotted openings.
I11 utilizing our improved sample holding and displaying device a sample strip of the goods of desired length is, as indicated at 8, arranged between the upper and lower members of the casing or holder described, the rear and higher portion of the casing 4 being em ployed as a storage-space,wherein the surplus material may be contained in folds, as indi cated more clearly in Fig. 3. From this rear portion of the holder the strip 8 extends forwardly between the members 2 and 3, being threaded, as shown, through the slotted openings 7, for the purpose of creating a desirable friction when the same is pulled outward. The outer portion of the strip is designed, as indicated, to run over and drop downward in front of the upturned outer end portion of the holder, thereby displaying from the forward end of the casing a portion of the goods contained therein.
It is evident that the sample strip may be inserted or placed in position within the case or holder heretofore described by raising the upper leaf or member 1 of the holder, which owing to its spring character will readily re turn to its horizontal position after the insertion and arrangement of the goods.
\Vhile it is obvious that the above-described holder may be employed independent of any support therefor, the same is particularly designed, as indicated in Fig. 4. of the drawings, to have its body portion inserted within the center of a bolt of goods, such as is indicated at E), in such manner as to cause its outer end portion to project on the outer side of the bolt, thereby admitting of thc depending cnd of the sample strip being dis played at the end of said bolt.
From the above-described construction and operation it will readily be seen that the sample-holder will provide a source from which samples of goods may be cut Without mutilatinp, the goods forming the bolt and that said holder and displaying device will also provide an exceedingly convenient means of displaying the character of the goods contained in the bolt.
It will be observed that the construction of our device is simple and that the same may be produced at a reasonable cost of manufacture in a neat and attractive fOllD.
Having now fully described our invention, what We claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A sample-holder comprising a single blank bent upon itself to form upper and lower integral plates, said upper plate having its forward portion provided with transverse parallel slots and having its rear portion raised to provide an enlarged space between said plates an d said lower plate having side flanges bent toward said upper plate and an upturned end provided with means for holding a card, substantially as specified.
