SHOW-CASE CONSTRUCTION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 633,345, dated September 19, 1899.
Application filed May 18, 1899. semina. 717,256. (No model.)
To all whom) zit may concern):
Be it known that I, FREDERICK C. JORGE- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, inthe county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Show-Case Construction, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to an improvement in show-cases in the construction of which plate-glass is used to a great extent.
My primary object is to provide for showcase construction a clip or fastening of improved construction .for securing the glass plates together at lines wheresaid plates meet to form corners of the show-case, which fastening obviates to a large extent the necessity of drilling holes in the glass.
In the accompanying drawings the clip is shown forming the joint at the meeting corners of three plates, constituting, respectively, the top, the front, and an end ofthe case. It readily will appear, however, that by a 1nodification the clip maybe adapted for use at the meeting edges of two plates.
In the drawings, Figure l is a view in front upper perspective of a portion of a show-case constructed according to my improvements; Fig. 2, an enlarged broken plan view showing one corner of the case with a clip in place; Fig. 3, a vertical section on line 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4.-, a vertical section on line 4 of Fig. 2; Fig. 5, a bottomplan View of a clip, and Fig. 6 a broken section on line 6 of Fig. 1.
In the preferred construction the clips form the sole connection between the top, the front, and the ends of the case. A suitable base and rear side are employedythe latter being provided with doors or slides, as desired.
A represents the bottom or base of the case; B, the front vertical plate; C, an end plate; E, the top plate, and F the rear frame, ordinarily supplied with a slide or a hinged door for access to the case.
' G represents the clip, preferably comprising a flat horizontally-disposed plate d, provided with a threaded perforation a', depending iianges b c, parallel, respectively, to the front B and end C, and lugs b c', forming, with the flanges b and c, recesses b2 c2 for the vertical front and end plates. j Strips of felt b3' c3 are cemented to the inner faces of the iianges b and c. The lugs b c are capable of being bent to or from the flanges l) and c to accommodate plates of different thicknesses. A strip of felt d is cemented to the front vertical edge of the plate C, forming contact with the adjacent vertical margin of the iiush projecting plate B.
rIhe adjacent upper corners of the plates B and C fit into the channels b2 czaud are thereby bound together. The plate a of the clip rests upon the upper edges of the plates B and C and in turn affords at its own upper surface a bearing for the top plate E to rest upon, as shown clearly in Figs. 2 and 3. Strips of felt e f are cemented to the upper edges of the plates B and C, respectively, said strips commencing at the edges of the plate a, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 4,'and
forming with the plate an even surface contacting with the under surface of the glass plate E. The plate E is provided with a perforation g, which registers with the threaded perforation a of the clip. A flat headed screw g serves to secure the parts together, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. It thus appears that the only part exposed above the glass top E at the front corner is the head of the screw g and also that the only perforation through glass made in forming the joint is the single perforation through the plate E. It is possible to provide the part a with means for eugagin g the plate, and thus dispense with the screw g', if desired. The .upper surface of the part a of the clip and the outer surfaces of the flanges b and c thereof are visible through the glass top plate, and these parts, together with the head of the screw, are nickeled or otherwise ornamentallyfiuished. The part a preferably has its inner edge cut in the arc of a circle, as shown. The top plate E is shown secured at the rear corner to the top of the rear'frame F by a screw h. Any other fastening means may be employed at this point, however. preferably rest at theirlower edges in grooves (not shown) in the base A. Where the case is not of too great length no fastenings between the plates I5 and E, except at the corners of the case, are necessary. If the case is a long one, however, clips adapted to the purpose maybe employed for connecting said plates midway of their length. Such clips would have a top formation suited to their The plates B and C.
IOO
new location and would have but a single recess provided on their under surfaces for receiving the upper edge of the plate B.
Changes in details of construction within the spirit of my invention are understood to fall Within the scope of the appended claims.
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a show-case, or the like, the combination with the bottoni and the rear wall of the case, of an end plate and a front side plate, a clip resting on said plates at their adjacent upper corners provided with fianges contacting with the outer margins of the plates, and also provided with lugs contacting with the inner margins thereof and provided further with a vertical perforation, said lugs being susceptible of being bent to accommodate plates of varying thicknesses, a top plate resting upon said clip having a vertical perforation, and a screw passing thrugh the perforation of the top plate and into the perforation in the clip, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, the clip for fastening the corners of show-cases, and the like, comprising the plate a having the screw-socket a and provided with the edge iianges I) c, and with the lugs b and c projecting from the face of the plate parallel with the fianges, said lugs being susceptible of being bent, substantially as described.
