PICK-HOLDING DEVICE FOR IVIANDOLINS.

lie it known that I, THoMAs H. SMITH, a citi zen of the United States of America,residing at Eighty-Four, in the county of Vashington and State of Pennsylvania,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in PicklIolding Devices for Mandolins, of which the following is a specication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in pick-holding devices for mandolins, and relates in general to receptacles applied to stringed instruments and the like.

The invention has for its object to place a small receptacle on the under side of the head of a stringed instrument for the reception of mandolin picks, strings, mutes, and the like.

The invention has for its further object to construct a device of this character that may be easily applied to the neck of stringed instruments and one that may be conveniently opened and closed.

The invention has for its still further 0bject to design a receptacle of the above-re ferred-to class that will be extremely simple in its construction, strong, durable, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consistsn the novel coustruction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.

In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views thereof, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a neck of a stringed instrument with my improvement attached thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of a rectangular frame forming the sides of the receptacle. Fig. et is an inverted view of the same. Fig. is a detail perspective view of the lid or cover.

Referring to the drawings by reference-numerals, 1 indicates a mandolin-head carrying on its under face a rectangular frame 2, the said frame having two of its walls beveled, as indicated by the numeral Formed integral with said frame are arranged apertured lugs 4 4i, which are secured to the mandolinhead .by means of screws 5 5.

The reference-numeral 6 indicates a lid carrying guides 7 7, which are formed inte gral therewith and are bent over at an angle of approximately forty-five degrees to conform with the beveled sides 3 of the frame 2. At the rearward end of the cover 6 extends a strap 8, which is bent upon itself, the end of said strap extending through an aperture 9, formed in the lid, said end serving as a stop when the receptacle is opened.

The reference-numeral l0 indicates a forward extension of the lid, which is bent over upon itself, forming a handle.

From the foregoing description the operation of my improved device will be readily understood.

It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my` invention.

I-Iaving thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a receptacle of the character described the combination of a frame having beveled sides,apertured lugs formed integral with said frame, in combination with a lid or cover carrying guides bent over at an angle of approximately fortyiive degrees, a strap formed on the rear side of said cover, said lid or cover provided with an aperture adjacent to the strap, said strap being bent upon itself, the free end of which extends through the aperture formed in the lid serving as a stop when the receptacle is opened, and a suitable handle arranged upon the forward end of said lid, all parts being arranged substantially as herein shown and described.
