Description

N0. 63|,675. Patented Aug. 22, I899. A. W. ROGERS.
ABRASIVE PAD COVER FOR BUFFING MACHINES.
(Application filed Nov. 16, 1896.
{No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT Fries.
ANDREW W. ROGERS, OF BEVERLY, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO SID- NEW W. WINSLOW, TRUSTEE, OF SAME PLACE.
ABRASlVE PAD-COVER FOR BUFFlNG-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letterslfatent No. 631,675, dated August 22, 1899. Application filed November 16, 1896. Serial No. 612,231. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, ANDREW W. ROGERS, of Beverly, county of Essex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an improvementin Abrasive Pad-Covers for Buffing-Ma- V chines, of which the following description, in}
connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to an abrasive cover for the buffing-pad of a boot and shoe buffing machinesuch, for example, as is shown in Letters Patent No. 221,647, dated November 11, 1879, to F. Winslow and O. S. Fifieldand is intended as an improvement on the buffingpad covers of the kinds shown in patents to Andrew W. Rogers, No. 523,594, dated July 24, 1894, and to H. A. Webster, No. 505,644, dated September 26, 1893. The said patents to Rogers and to Webster show pad-covers composed of a working face and a marginal attaching portion, the said covers being molded at the junction of the working face and attaching portion to conform to the circular periphery of the pad on which the abrasive cover is to be used. cut the blank is shown as molded so that the marginal attaching portion projects inwardly over and substantially parallel with the working face, while the Webster patent shows the marginal attaching portion molded to stand substantially at right angles to the working face, it being intended that the marginal portion shall be bent inward, so as to substantially overlie the working face in the operation of attaching the cover to the pad or foot on which it is used on the machine. Both of these forms are open to objection, the one shown in the Rogers patent being objectionable for the reason that it is difficult to introduce the pad or foot between the working face and the inwardly-turned marginal portion, while the form shown in the Webster patent, although affording facility in the application of the abrasive cover to the pad, is objectionable for the reason that the turning in of the attaching portion in the operation of attaching the cover to the pad is liable to distort the crease or fold at the junction of the working face and attaching margin or to produce creases or wrinkles in the abrasive In the Rogers patthe pad without distortion or breakage of the periphery.
The cover forming the subject of thisinvention comprises a working face and a marginal portion and a series of tongues contiguous thereto, together constituting the part by which the cover is fastened in working position in the machine after the pad has been introduced into said cover. At the j unction of the marginal portion and working face the cover is molded to fit the circular periphery of the pad, a bend or crease being thereby formed between the circular working face and the said marginal portion, which is folded in ward, so as to overlie the working face. At or near the junction of the tongues with the overlying marginal portion the said tongues are bent or folded so as to project outward, thus leaving the central portion of the cover to within a short distance of the periphery open or uncovered for the ready insertion of the pad. The cover may thus easily be applied to the pad while the tongues project out ward, and after the periphery of the pad is fitted in the crease or fold formed at the j unction of the working face and overlying marginal portion the said tongues may be, by a suitable implement, all turned inward over the top of the padand securely fastened by a suitable clamp, thereby holding the pad-cover firmly on the pad while in use in the machine.
Figure 1 is a plan view of an abrasive cover embodying this invention; Fig. 2, an underneath plan showing the working face; Fig.
tion. The said notches by which the tongues Z2 are formed terminate at or near the junction thereof with the marginal portion, which is continuous or unbroken, as best shown in Fig. 1, for a sufiicient width from the junction thereof at a with the periphery of the working face.
The material of the cover is molded, so that the marginal portion 1) is turned inward so as to overlie the working face. The periphery of the cover at the junction a between the working face and marginal attaching portion is thus smooth, without corners or angles, and the attaching margin is smooth and continuous over the working face and for a short distance inward from the periphery thereof, as shown at I), Fig. 1.
At a point near the bases of the tongues 11 or substantially at their junction at b with the continuous inturned marginal portion Z), the said tongues are provided with a molded or substantially permanent crease, so that they overlie the portion Z) and project outward thereovcr, as shown. By this construction the upperor inner surface of the working portion is left open or uncovered except for the comparatively narrow permanentlyinturned portion D, so that the pad can be easily inserted therein without danger of breaking olf the tongues b or distorting 0r cracking any part of the abrasive material, and after the pad is thus inserted the tongues b may be easily carried inward, turning on their creases or folds at b as a hinge, and all Securely held by a suitable clamping device of the kind commonly employed for fastening covers of this general character, as illustrated, for example, in said patents to Webster or to Rogers, hereinbefore referred to.
I claim An abrasive pad-cover for a bufiing-machine pad, com posed of a working face, a marginal portion contiguous to said working face molded to extend inward from the periphery of the workingface and overlie the marginal portion thereof, and a series of tongues contiguous to said molded marginal portion, and folded at or near their junction therewith to overlie the same, and project outward thereover, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ANDRElV \V. ROGERS.
