VYLY R. APPLEEAY, OF LOWELL, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HENRY HOOK ADAMS, OF SAME PLACE.
RlPPlNG-TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 630,792, dated August 8, 1899. Application filed May 1, 1899. Serial No. 715,235. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WYLY R. APPLEBAY, of Lowell, in the county of Washington and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ripping-Tools, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in instruments for ripping seams or stitches thereof; and the object is to provide an instrument of this character designed to be operated with a scissors-like motion of the handles and by means of which the stitches of a seam may be rapidly out without danger of cutting the cloth.
I I will describe a ripping-tool embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding part-s in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a rippingtool embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an inside View of one of the members andshowing the cutting-blade in one position. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the cutting blade in another position. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4 of Fig.1, and Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1.
The ripping-tool comprises two handles 1 2, pivotally connected together at 3. On the end of the handle 1 is a plate-like head portion 4, in the inner side of which a vertical recess 5 is formed. Secured to the head 4 is a plate 6, similar in shape to the head and having a recess 7, in which the projected end 8 of the handle 2 may move. The plate 6 forms one side-of the recess 5, and in this recess a cutting-blade 9 is movable. The head 4 and the plate 6 are each provided at the front and near the lower end with a tooth 10. The two teeth, in fact, form a single tooth inclined downward and forward, and this tooth is designed to run along the under side of the stitches while ripping. The base of the tooth terminates withinthe recess 5, as plainly indicated in Fig. 2, so as to form an opening in which the blade operates upon the stitches. F From the base of the tooth the walls extend vertically sufficiently to form a space to receive cloth, and from the upper end of these walls the ends of the head and plate are carried outward. The plate 6 may be removably connected to the head, so that the cutting blade may be taken out and sharpened whennecessary.
Movement is imparted to the cutting-blade 9 by movements of the handle 2. As here shown, the handle 2 has a pin 11, which projects into an opening 12 at the rear edge of the blade. The blade in its downward movement is designed to have also an outward movement, and in its upward movement it is designed to have an inward movement. To permit of this, the recess 5 is somewhat wider at the lower end than at the top-that is, the front wall of the recess is inclined from the top downward and forward, and connected to the headis a pin 13, which projects into a slot 14, formed in the lower portion of the blade 9 and inclined upward and rearward. By this construction when the handle 2 is moved upward relatively to the handle 1 the blade 9 will be moved downward by said handle, and 7 5 the pin engaging the wall of the slot 14 will cause the lower portion of the blade to swing outward to engage with and cut'the stitches as the instrument is moved along. On the up ward movement of the blade the cutting of the stitches will also take place, but the blade will be swung inward, as indicated in Fig. 2.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentp 1. Aripping-tool,comprising two pivotallyconnected handles, a cutting-blade movable longitudinally of one of the handles, and means for swinging said blade inward and outward during its longitudinal movements, substantially as specified.
2. A ripping-tool, comprising two pi votallyconnected handles, a head portion on one of said handles, an inclined tooth extended for ward from said head portion, a recess in the head portion and having an outward opening at the base of the tooth, a connecting-blade movable in said recess, connections between said blade and one of the handles, whereby said blade maybe moved longitudinally, and
means for swinging said blade outward during this downward movement, substantially as specified.
3. A ripping-tool, comprising" two pivotallyconnected handles, a head portion on one of said handles having a recess, a plate on said head portion and forming one wall of the recess, a cutter-blade movable in said recess, a connection between said blade and one of the handles, whereby the blade may be moved vertically, and means for swinging said blade outward during its downward movement and inward during its upward movement, substantially as specified.
4. A ripping-tool, comprising two pivotallyconnected handles, a cutting-blade movable vertically on one of said handles and operated by the other handle, an inclined slot WYLY R. APPLEBAY.
