Description
RICHARD MONTGOMERY,' yOF NEWr YORK, N. Y. Lettere Patent LVO. 63,07*?, dated March 19, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN GUEVED GOEEGATED STEEL PLATES AS AN' ARTICLE 0E MANUFAGTURE.
@La .rlgehnte maar tn iu tlgeter @tetten ntuu un making ant nf up time.
TO ALL WHOM IT MA1T CONCERN:
Be it known that I, RICHARD MONTGOMERY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new, useful, and' improved article of manufacture from which tolconstruct Furnaces, Steam Chimneys, and Flues for Steam Boilers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a clear, full, and exact description thereof, reference being had to thenceompany'ing drawings, forming a part of this specification, in whichlFigure l represents a plan view of a horizontal flue nade from my improved article of manufacture.
Figure 2-representsa section on line AB, iig. 1,' looking'in the direction of arrow 1.
Figure 3 represents an end view of iig. 1,'1ooking in the direction of arrow 2, fig. 1t and Figure 4 represents an end View of part of a furnace.
` In the application and use of the inventionpatented to me on the 29th day of October, A. D. 1850, it has been found that many o'f the difficulties which wcrezbefore met with in the construction of steam boilers have been obviated; still, in the use of corrugated iron lues .for steam-boiler furnaces and steam chimneys there have been great diliculties resulting from scales vforming on the iron, and many plans have been resorted'to to obviate the same; such plans, for instance, as the application of various chemical compounds to the interior of the boiler, and' also galvani'zing the saine. All of these plans are, however, attended with muchexpense and inCOI1- venicnce. To obviate these and other objections which have been found to exist, led me to make a series of costly experiments, which resulted in the present invention'. l
In'thc production of myimproved article of manufacture,'stee1 is subjected to such pressure asis suicient to roll it (when properly heated) into thin sheets, after which it is pressed through corrugated andl'sweieping rolls, whereby -it is corrugatedand properly curved, as shown in the drawings. When it is to be used in the construction` 0f tubular ilues, as shown in figs. 1, 2, and 3, the edges are riveted together, as shown in'igs. 2 and 3;"and when used for furnaces, as shown in iig. 4, the edges may be fastened to base-pieces in any proper manner'.
Some of the advantages resulting from `nay present invention will now be stated: First. Scales are not so liable to form, in consequence of the hard and smooth surface of the steel as compared with iron. Second. The lues are not so liableto be injured and destroyed by the action of the re, sincemuch thinner sheets can be used without at all affecting the strcngth'of the dues than if they were composed of iron. Now, as thin sheetsA of metal transmit heatv much quicker than` thick ones, the interior of the dues is not liable to be exposed Ato overheating. Third. More steam will be generated With-the same amount of fuel than in the case of iron ues of the same strength, since theheated Igases are not so 1in-ble to pass through the dues without generating steam in consequence of the sensitive nature of the thin steel plates. Fourth. The weight of the material is reduced nearly one-fourth, and that, too, while the strength and durability are increased.'v Fifth. The material being properly' curved as well as corrugated, can be manufactured and put into the market all ready for use either in the construction of new iues or the repair of yold ones, thus obviatin'g the delay which might result from a necessity of corrugating and curving the material for anyv particular case.
Having described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent as an improveda'rticle ofmanufaeture, is-
'Curved corrugated steel for the construction of steam chimneys, furnace and fines for steam bolers, and for other purposes, substantially as described.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
' ARICHARD MONTGOMERY.
Witnesses H. C. WIDDIcoiuBn, WM. YORKE AT Lun.
