LIBERTY L. YATEs, oF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TROUSERS.
src'IrIcA'iIo forming part of 'Letters Patent No. 630,639, dated August s, 1899.
Application tiled October 8, 1898.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that LLIBERTY LYATES, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trousers, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enablev those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. l
This invention relates to trousers for use by bicyclists, golf-players, and athletes generally; and the object thereof is to provide a pair of trousers which are constructed so that they may be converted into knickerbockers when desired.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following speciflcation,ot' which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of one leg of a pair of trousers constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2, a similar view showing parts of the leg in a different position and part in section, and Fig. -3 a sectional side view showing the leg of the trousers converted into knickerbockers.
In the drawings forming part of this speci- Iication the separate parts of myimprovement are designated by the same numerals of referencein each of the views, and in said drawings I have shown at 5 one leg of a pair of trousers, and said leg is open at one side from about the knee downwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the separate sides thereof may be folded backwardly, as indicated in said ligure. The separate sides or liaps of the leg formed by opening the same as above described are provided with fasteningdevices similarto an ordinary glovebutton, the separate parts of which are shown at 6 and 7, and one of said sides or fiaps is provided with a narrow fly 8, which terminates above the bottom of the trousersleg, as shown at 9.
. Secured to the inner side of the trousers-leg, above the knee and eXtendin g entirely around said leg, is a strip or band V10, from which are suspended a plurality of elastic straps 11, which are provided with eyes 12 at their lower ends, and at a predetermined distance below the knee is another strip or band 13, which is secured to the inside,of the trousers-leg Serial No. 692,993. (No model.)
and extends entirely around the same and is provided with hooks 14E. The hooks 14 and eyes 12 constitute fastening devices for connecting the lower ends of the elastic straps l1 with the strip or band 13, and instead of employing the hooks and eyes for this purpose any suitable fastening device may be substituted.
The bottom of the trousers-legs is provided with a wide inwardly-turned henror fold 17, to one end of which is secured a buckle 18 and to the other end a strap 19, and secured to said'hem or fold adjacent to the buckle 18 is a pocket 20, adapted to receive said buckle, and the strap 19 is passed through the keeper 21.
In converting the trousers into knickerbockers the elastic straps 11 are connected with the strip or band 13 by means of the fastening devices 12 and 14, and in doing this the leg is folded upwardly and inwardly, as shown at 22 in Fig. 3, thus producing a downwardly-directed outer fold 23. This raises the hemmed portion 17 correspondingly, and the said hem is folded outwardly and upwardly, as shown at 24, and the strap 19 is connected with the buckle 18 and drawn tight. This causes the bottom portion of the trousers-leg to lit the leg tightly below the knee, and in practice the upper end of the stocking-leg is drawn over the lower part or band of the knickerbockers below the downwardly-directed fold 23, and thus the stocking conceals the upwardly-folded hem of the trousers-leg and also the strap 19 and buckle 18.
The operation of folding the legs of the trousers upwardly and inwardly and connecting the elastic straps 11 with the strip or band 13 is preferably performed before the trousers are put on; but by opening the leg of the trousers at one side, as herein described, this operation may be performed after the trousers have been put on.
My improvements are well adapted to accomplish the result for which they are intended and do not add materially to the cost of the trousers, and it will be apparent that changes in andmodications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
IOO
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A pair of trousers, the legs of which are open from the lower end thereof approximately to the knee, and provided with fastening devices for closing said open portion; said legs being provided with a series of elastic straps ranging approximately to and above the knee, and with other fastening devices at.
a point between the knee and the lower end of the trousers, which are adapted to engage with the upper fastening devices, whereby that portion of the trousers-leg which is midway between the knee and the lower end,
y will be carried and drawn inwardly and up-
