UNDERWAI'ST.
srn'ci'rrca'rron forming part of Letters Patent No. 630,157, dated August 1, 1899.
Application filed May 21,1898. Serial No, 681,351. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EVA M. WVORTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Underwaists, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to improvements in underwaists; and it consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter more particularly described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View of my complete invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line was of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is adetailplan View of one of the shoulder-strips and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the same, taken on the line y y of Fig. l.
The object of my invention is to construct a simple, novel, and practical underwaist more especially to be worn or used by children, but can be constructed of various sizes and worn by women with like results, and it consists of a waistband made of two strips or pieces the ends of which are buttoned or otherwise secured together to form a complete band which is adapted to encircle the body of the wearer about the Waist, buttons secured to the outside of the band to which the skirts or lower undergarments are removably secured, two oppositely-arranged yokes secured to said band and adapted to be located directly in front and rear or back of the wearer, respectively, said yokes extending a suitable distance below the band, to which a napkin or other cloth may be removably secured, the upper ends of the yokes terminating into forks, two shoulder-straps, short elastic strips connecting the ends of the shoulder-straps to the forked ends of the yokes, and supportingpieces arranged at an angle, one end of each being secured to the opposite sides of the yokes and having their opposite ends attached to the band, whereby said band is always held in a true horizontal position for properly supporting the lower garments, all of which will now be described by reference to the draw- 1ngs.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 represents a waistband which is constructed of one long strip 2 and a short strip 3, the ends being temporarily united by buttons 4, carried by the ends of the long band, and buttonholes 5, formed in the ends of the short band. To the band are secured additional buttons 6, which operate as a means for se curing the lower undergarments to said hand. To each of the strips 2 and 3 which form the bandis secured a yoke 7, the lower ends of which extend below the band for the purpose previously described, the upper ends of said yokes terminating into yokes 8.
The shoulderstraps 9 are of a sufficient length to pass completely over the shoulders of the wearer, and the ends of said shoulderstraps and forked ends of the yokes are united by elastic strips 10, which operate to provide a yielding connection, whereby perfect freedom is given the body, and, further, all parts comprising the underwaist will remain in their respective positions upon the body. In order to hold the band 1 in a true horizontal position upon the body and properly support the garments to be carried by the same, supporting-strips 11 are employed which are arranged at an angle and having their opposite ends secured to the yokes and band, respec-- tively, the lower ends of two said strips leading from one yoke being secured to the short strip 3, and the lower ends of the other two strips 11 secured to the long strip 2, whereby the underwaist may be easily removed from the body of the wearer.
In carrying out my invention the same is constructed of any suitable textile fabric to render it pliable and readily conform to the body and when in use will be comfortable and yet operate as a brace, thereby holding the shoulders in their proper position and the body erect.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is- An underwaist, consisting of a waistband comprising a short and long strip, means for temporarily securing the opposite ends of the same, buttons attached to said band, two tapering yokes one of which is carried by the short strip, and the other by the long strip, the lower ends of which extend below the said strips, said yokes having forked upper ends, inclined supporting strips connecting one yoke with the ends of the short strip forming a part of the band, additional inclined snp- In testimony whereof I afi'ix my signature) porting-strips connecting the opposite yoke in presence of two Witnesses.
with the long strip formin the rernainiin part of the band, shoulder-stiaps, and elasti EVA WORTH strips arranged in pairs for uniting the ends Witnesses:
of the shoulder-straps with the forked ends 0. F. KELLER,
of the yokes as and for the purpose described. 1 ALFRED A. MATHEY.
