To all whom t may concern.:
Beit known that I, JACOB FULTON SHULTZ, acitizen of the United States, residing at San Jacinto, in the county of Riverside and State of California, have invented a new and useful Hydrocarbon-Burner, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to hydrocarbon-burners particularly designed for burning crude petroleum and analogous oils, and having for its object to provide an improved burner-aperture and means for supplyinga combustionsupporting agent,whereby a distributed liame is produced adapted to come in contact with an extended area of boiler or other surface to y avoid burning or crystallization at one point and in order to economize the expenditure of fuel.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a burner apparatus constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the burner-head.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding' parts in all the figures of the drawings.
The burner-head consists of a body or shank portion 1, provided with parallel bored channels 2 and 3, respectively adapted for fluid fuel and a combustion-supporting agentsuch as air-,steam or the equivalent thereof-and each channel communicates with an axially transverse chamber, respectively designated by the numerals 2 and 3, of which the outer open ends are itted with removable plugs 4. The chambers of the burner'- head are separated by a partition 5, and; in the front walls of the chambers, in the planes of the side surfaces of said separating-partition, are formed burner and combustion-supporter apertures 6 and 7 of approximately semicircular extent and separated beyond the face or front side of the burner-head bya tongue 8, which is formed as an extension of said partition, the tongue being segmental or crescent shape in plan. The burner or fuel orifice or aperture is in the plane of the upper side of the tongue and consists of a narrow slit, through which the fuel passes and spreads over the upper surface of the tongue, whereas the combustion-supporting aperture or orifice is arranged in the plane of the under surface 'of the tongue, and thus catches the fuel as it passes over the curved front edge of the tongue and projects it in a fan- 6o like iiame, (when ignited,) whereby the distribution of the 'llame over the exposed sur face of a boiler or other apparatus is accomplished.
The shank or body portion of the burnerhead is connected and alined with a combustion supporter conveyer 9, and extending through this conveyer is a feed-tube 10 for fuel of smaller diameter than the conveyer and adapted to be surrounded by steam or 7o other heated combustion-supporting agent traversing the conveyer. Communication is established between a supply-pipe 11 for a combustion-supporting agent and the conveyer 9 by means of a T-coupling 12 or its 75 equivalent, and the fuel-feed tube extends through said coupling and beyond the outer end thereof through the stuffing-box 13 and communicates, by means of a four-arm coupling 14., with a fuel-supply pipe 15. This four- 8e arm coupling preferably has one arm tted with a removable plug 16 to facilitate the removal of accumulations of sediment or other foreign matter in the coupling, and communicating with another' arm of said four-arm 85 coupling is an intermediate or shunt conveyer 17, extending from the supply-pipe 11, for combustion supporting agent. This shunt c onveyer is preferably provided with controlling-valve 18, and when the supply of 9o fuel has been cut off by means of the valve provided in the fuel-supply pipe for that purpose steam or other comloustion-supportingo agent may be turned through the conveyer -17 to blow out the fuel-feed pipe, and thus 95 remove accumulations of foreign. matter therein.
It will be noted that the feed-pipe and the conveyer for combustion-supporting agent are straight from the point where they teleroo scope to the burner-head, thus avoiding elbows or angles liable to serve as an obstruction for the fuel or combustion-supporting agent and as offering a stop for hard substances in the fuel. Furthermore, it will be seen that the construction and arrangement of the. device are simple and provide for the cleansing of the interior thereof with facility. Also the specific construction of the burner prevents the filtering or dripping of the fuel through the stream or blast of combustionsupporting agent and the causing of trouble by the accumulation of such drippings contiguous to the burner. The continuous blast of combustion-supporting agent catches all of the fuel as it flows over the tongue in a fan-like sheet and drives it, as described, in a fan-like spray into contact with the surface to be heated.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit or 'sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim is A burner apparatus having a shank or body portion l provided with separate fuel and steam passages 2 and 3 separated by an interposed partition 5 and provided at their outer ends With parallel segmental orices 6 and 7 between which the partition is extended to form a tongue, a steam-conveyer tube 9 connected with the shank or body portion of the burner-head and communicating With the steam-passage 3, a fuel-conveyer tube 10 extending through the tube 9 and communieating with the rear end of the fuel-passage 2, said fuel-conveyer tube being extended through a stuffing-box in the rear end of the steam-conveyer tube 9, and a branch steamsupply tube having its members arranged in communication, respectively, with the rear ends of the tubes 9 and 10, substantially as specified.
