Letters Patent 1Y0. 63,826, dated April 16, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE FENCE.
TO `WIIOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Beit known that I, JOHN AUGSPURGER, of Trenton, Butler county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Fences; and I do hereby/ declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention relates to a light, portable fence, easily moved from place to place, and quickly set up and Aconnected where desired Without the labor of digging post-holes, at the saine time that it makes a firm fence,
and cannot 'be lifted or disconnected by swine to get under, nor pushed over by cattle, nor easily blown down by the wind, but may be quickly and easily separated and removed by the proprietor when desirable.v
The drawing represents a portion of two panels as set up, showing the inode of connecting them.
I construct my fence in panels as light as consistent with proper strength, consisting ot' two posts of unequal lengths, A and I3, connected by a suitable number of rails, (preferably ve,) with a brace either diagonal or vertical about the mid-length of the panel. The post A at one end of cach panel is only of sutlicient length for the attachment of the rails, but the other, B, is longenvleaving a foot to support the panel above the ground of suchlength as may be necessary, one foot being thus furnished at cach joint. The top, bottom, and centrel rails, (more or less,) of each panel extend at each end beyond the posts, and are gained out for half their width, the gains II F being in the upper side at one end and the lower side at the-other, 4and the panels are connected by engaging the gains of one panel in the corresponding ones of the next, as shown.- At Gr is shown an arrangement of gains for the purpose of attaching a cross fence, shown in dotted lines. Cleats secured over the rails at one post B, and the brace C of each alternate panel, retain in position a short length of rail, D, which slides hack and forth under the top rail, and the panels being connected by means of the gains .this slidc D is protruded Vunder the joint, thereby preventing the raising of the upper panel to disconnect them. A stop or peg, E, regulates, by itsimpact against the post I3, the extent of motion of the slide. The panels are set upon the ground in a worin or zigzag form so thatveach panel thusserves as a brace for those adjacent, securing the firmness and rigidity of vthe fence.
I claim heroin as new, and oi` my/invention-- '.lho construction of a light, portable fence in lengths or panels, with one short and one long post, substan tially as shown and described, to be Connected and scoured in a worin or zigzag forni by'mca'ns of the prolonged and gained rails I"- F', in combination with the slide D, as shown and set forth.
In. testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
' JOHN AUGSPURG'ER.
