To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. HOWE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, county of Montgomery, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elastic-TreadHorseshoes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My improvements relate to horseshoes in which an elastic tread is provided to relieve the horse from jars and to prevent slipping; and the improvements relate particularly to the means employed for retaining the packing in place in the manner to be hereinafter particularly pointed out and claimed. Heretofore it has always been considered necessary to provide means for retaining the packing throughout its entire length; but I have discovered that in that class of shoe in which a toe-opening is provided it is only necessary to provide means for retaining the packing at the toe, and it is to a construction of this kind that my invention is particularly directed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a bottom plan View of my improved shoe; Fig. 2, a front View of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the plate for retaining the packing.
A is the body of the shoe of the usual construction and made of any suitable material, provided with a groove to on the under side extending from heel to heel and having an opening I) in the front Wall of the shoe at the toe. Inserted in this groove is an elastic packing B, of rubber or other suitable material, which packing also fills out the toe-opening. The side walls of the groove at the toe-opening are preferably beveled, as shown at c, and the packing does not quite fill these spaces, although this constructionisimmaterial. The elastic packing being fitted to the groove from heel to heel, I secure same in place by any convenient means located at the toe-opening alone. The method I prefer for this purpose is by means of the plate 0. This plate is of a width just sufficient to fit within the base of the groove at the toe, the plate being firmly secured to the under surface of the packin To secure the plate (3 to the packing, I cut slots at d therein and. turn up the metal to form hooks e c, which are slipped into slots cut in the packing, the plate thus forming a back or base for the toe portion of the packing. The rubber is then vulcanized at these points, and the metal plate thus becomes practically a part of the packing. The ends ff of this plate extend a slight distance beyond the packing on each side, and in order to properly secure the packing the heel portions are first pushed to place, and the metal plate is then bent slightly in order that it may be sprung into place at the base of the groove in the toe-opening. In this manner the packing at the toe is held firmly in place and no other attachment for the packingis at all necessary.
The heel portion of the packing, embraced, as it is, by the side Walls of the groove within which it is located, will remain in place without being otherwise secured, so long as the toe portion is prevented from displacement. Instead of the plate sprung into the base of the groove other suitable means for securing the toe portion of the packing will readily suggest themselves. Holes can be drilled in the side walls of the groove at the toe and a wire or spikes inserted therethrough into the packing. While the method I have illustrated is the preferable construction, I desire to cover in this application not only this particular arrangement, but also any means for securing the packing at the toe only Where an elastic-tread packing is employed in connection with such toe-opening.
Having thus described my invention, what packing at the toe only, substantially as defor attaching said plate to the shoe, substantially, as described. 7
