UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RUA E. BURKE, OF MOUNT TABOR, OREGON.
ADJUSTABLE FLOWER-POT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 637,763, dated November 28, 1899.
Application filed July 13,1897- Serial No. 644,446. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RUA E. BURKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Tabor, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Flower-Pots, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings as a part thereof.
My invention relates to flower-pots made in sections hinged together so that the same may be swung apart and united again.
The object of my invention is to improve upon such flower-pot for the purpose of simplifying the construction of the same. To accomplish this, I make use of a band-like contrivance in which the two halves of the flowerpot may be inserted and securely held, said band comprising two equal members hinged together and provided with means to fasten the free ends together.
I carry my invention into efiect as illustrated in said drawings, in which Figure l is an elevation showing the said band so fastened over the two halves of the flower-pot, the latter being shown in broken lines; and Fig. 2 is a perspective showing how the two halves of the flower-pot are secured in said band.
Referring to the letters on said drawings, A represents a divided flower-pot, in appearance of the usual pattern, out in two by a vertical dissecting-line E, running through the middle thereof. To hold said parts together, I have contrived a band-like device (shown in Fig. 1) comprising two semicircular straps of metal F, which are hinged together and provided with fastening means D at their free ends to unite the same. A strap 0 extends upward from about the middle portion of each half or member of the band, and each of such straps is provided at its upper extremity with a clamp like H, the function of which is to engage the rim of each part of the flower-pot, as shown. On the clamps are ears holding handles.
My invention may be used on an ordinary earthen pot. When used on a two-part pot, each member of the band should be securely fastened to one of such parts by means of the clamps H, and thereby enable the two halves of the flower-pot to be opened and closed again on the hinge, uniting the two members of the band F. When the band is properly adjusted, the free ends thereof may be tightly drawn together and locked by means of the catch D or other suitable device.
The band F strengthens the earthern flowerpot and prevents the bursting of the same by the enlargement of the roots by growth. The handles are convenient for handling the flower pot. The combined device is very convenient for transplanting and repotting plants without disturbing the roots or danger of breaking the flower-pot, and my device may be so embellished as to be an ornamental addition to any flower-pot. The means for fastening the free ends of said band together, as mentioned, should be adjustable, so that said band In ay accommodate itself to the diameter of the flower-pot to be encircled thereby.
The band F may also be made of a strip of flexible material, so as to render the hinge B unnecessary. Only means for fastening the front free ends of said band would be required.
What I claim is- 1. As a new article of manufacture, a twopart receptacle or vessel, which is wider at its top than at its base, and a strap-like band encircling said parts the free ends of which band have means for locking the same together, such band being further provided with straps, each of which has a clamp at its upper extremity for engaging the rim of the vessel, the parts being combined substantially as set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a twopart receptacle or vessel, which is wider at its top than at its base, and a strap-like band encircling said parts the free ends of which band have means for locking the same to-' gether, such band being further provided with straps, each of which has a clamp at its upper extremity for engaging the rim of the vessel, and a handle, the parts being com bined substantially as set forth.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a band comprising two members hinged together and provided with means for locking their free ends, each of such members having a strap as 0 provided at its upper extremity with a clamp like H for engaging the rimof a vessel, substantially as set forth.
.4. As a new article of manufacture, a twopart receptacle or Vessel, a band comprising two members hinged together andprovided with means for interlocking their free ends and'a handle on each member, the two members of the band being attached to the two parts of the vessel, so that such two parts may be opened and closed on the hinge of said band, the parts being combined, substantially as set forth, 7
5. As a new article of manufacture, a twopart receptacle or vessel, a band comprising two members hinged together and provided with means for locking their free ends, the two members of the band being attached to the two parts of the vessel so that such two parts may be opened and closed on the hinge of said members being further provided with a strap having a clamp at its upper extremity for engaging the rim of the Vessel, to enable the two parts or halves of the vessel to be opened and closed again on the hinge of said band, the parts being combined, substantially as set forth.
