UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM N. GOLDEN, OF MOULTRIE, GEORGIA;
STOVE OR FURNACE FOR WASHB OILERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 637,107, dated November 14-, 1899.
7 Application filed June 6, 1899. Serial No. 719,568. (No model.)
portable knockdown stove which is adapted to burn wood and constructed to confine the flame thereof entirely within the body of the stove and cause a circulation of the heat laterally beneath the washboiler.
A further object is to provide means where by different sizes of washboilers may be effectively heated upon a single stove.
To these ends the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and the minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the present invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the stove. Fig. 2 is a top plan view, the top of the stove being removed. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig.4 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
Corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings are designated by like characters of reference.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the body of the stove comprises top and bottom plates 1 and 2, respectively, and the substantially circular sides 3, fitted between said top and bottom plates and connecting the same together. The bottom plate 2 is provided with a pendent peripheral foot-flange 4, upon which the stove is adapted to rest, and the top plate is also provided with a pendent peripheral flange 5, which strengthens the top and gives finish thereto. Suitable grooves are provided in the inner faces of the top and bottom plates, preferably by means of parallel ribs 6, which are adapted to embrace the opposite edges of the sides 3 and hold the latter substantially in position between the top and bottom plates. The latter are firmly connected together by means of suitable bolts or rods 7, passing through the respective plates exterior of the sides of the stove and secured in place by means of nuts 8, fitted to the lower ends of the bolts or rods and adjacent to the inner side of the foot-flange 4, whereby said nuts are prevented from becoming accidentally displaced.
By reference to Fig. 2 it will be noted that the sides 3 form a substantially circular stovebody, which is provided 'with an opening at the front side thereof, and a tangential extension 9 projects forwardly from the circular body. Located within the circular body and opposite the extension 9 there is provided a partition 10, which is arranged parallel with the said extension and forms therewith a firebox. It will be further noted that the outer ends of the extension and the partition project in front of the front side of the circular stove-body, so as to provide a comparatively large fire-box. The front end of the fire-box is closed by means of a front 11, which is connected to the top and bottom plates of the stove in a manner similar to the circular side thereof and overlaps the outer end of the partition 10, so as to prevent longitudinal displacement thereof.
By reference to Fig. 3 it will be understood that the partition lO is fitted to the inner sides of the top and bottom plates 1 and 2 by means of parallel ribs 12 in the manner described for the circular sides 3, it also being understood that the front 11 is seoured'in a similar manner. The inner end of the groove formed by the parallel ribs 12 is closed by means of a stop-shoulder 13, against which the end of the partition 10 is adapted to engage, so as to prevent endwise movement of the latter. The forward portion of this partition is rounded or beveled downwardly, as
at 14, directly under the opening 15 in the 4 gagement with the bottoms of kettles or washboilers which do not engage against the top edge of the partition, thereby accommodating the stove to kettles or washboilers of different sizes. A suitable movable pin or lug 18 projects laterally through the arm 16 and is adapted to engage openings 19, provided in the adjacent side of the partition and arranged upon the arc of a circle, so that said arm may be held in its adjusted positions.
As best indicated in Fig. 2, it will be seen that the partition 10 terminates short of the rear side of the stove, so that the heat and flame from the fire-box pass rearwardly and around the rear end of the partition and thence forwardly to the elbow 20, which extends through the front of the circular side of the stove and adjacent to the outer side of the partition and communicates through the top plate 1 with a suitable stack or pipe 21, through which the smoke is adapted to be discharged. By reason of this arrangement the heat is compelled to take a circuitous passage beneath the washboiler, thereby obtaining the full effect of the heat.
Located within the firebox and extending longitudinally of the bottom thereof is a plurality of parallel ribs or flanges 22, upon which the fuel is adapted to rest, so as to provide a draft below the same. Furthermore, it will be seen that the front plate 11 is provided with an opening 23, through which the fuel is adapted to be fed, and said opening is closed by means of a door 24. This door is provided with suitable draft-openings 25, located below the upper edges of the ribs or flanges 22, so that a direct draft may be maintained below the fuel within the fire-box. The draft may be regulated by means of a slide 26, carried by the door and capable of varying the size of the draft-openings 25.
By reason of the herein-described construction the several parts of the stove are detachably fitted together in such a manner as to be readily assembled and do not require the employment of skilled labor. Furthermore, the provision of the central partition divides the body of the stove into substantially two parts, one of which forms the firebox, and said partition compels the heat and smoke to take a circuitous passage before being discharged through the smoke-pipe, whereby the full effect of the fire is obtained.
It will be understood that the opening 15 in the top of the stove is adapted to accommodate the largest washboiler, and the forward portion of the partition 10 is rounded or inclined downward, so that the bottom of said washboiler may be received within the opening and below the top of the stove. Also the supporting-arm 16 is made vertically ad-.
justable, so as to engage the bottoms of washboilers or kettles of different sizes to prevent the products of combustion from passing over the top of the partition.
The present invention provides an exceedingly effective and safe type of stove in that the full effect of the heat is obtained. It is capable of heating washboilers of diflerent sizes, and the construction and arrangement of the fire-box permit of the fuel being introd uced into the stove without removing the washboiler, so that the operator is not exposed to the heat and smoke which commonly escape through the stove-opening when the wash boiler is removed.
