No. 636,897. Patented Nov. l4, I899- C. H. &. G. H. CUTTING.
ELECTRIC GENERATOR OR MOTOR.

WITNESSES 1; W a k flaw, 4 21 X y j 5 A TTOHNE) J" UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES HENRY CUTTING AND GEORGE HAl VKINS CUTTING, OF DERBY, ENGLAND.
ELECTRIC GENERATOR OR MQTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 636,897, dated November 14, 1899.
Application filed August 23, 1899. Serial No. 728,177. (No model.]
T to whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, CHAELEs HENRY CUT- TING and GEORGE HAWKINS CUTTING, citizens of England, residing at Parliament Vorks, 105 Parliament street, Derby, in the county of Derby, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Electric Generators or Motors, of which the following is a'full and complete IO specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to electric generators and motors, and has more particular reference of, the object of the invention being to provide field-magnets cast or otherwise formed in a single piece together with the pole-pieces and which may be readily detached from their operative position and are otherwise simple in construction and operation.
Our invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which like reference characters denote like parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a field-magnet and pole-piece constructed according to our invention 5 Fig. 2, a similar View with the addition of a magnet-coil; Fig. 3, a sectional View of a portion of the yoke of an electric generator or motor constructed according to our invention and provided with the field magnet, pole-piece,and winding above shown; Fig. 4, an edge View of a modified form of construction of the yoke shown in Fig. 3 and two of the field-magnets and pole-pieces connected therewith; Fig. 5, a side View of one of the members of the yoke shown in Fig. 4, the field-magnets and pole-pieces being connected therewith and the other member of the yoke detached therefrom; Fig. 6, an edge view of the yoke construction shown in Fig. 4, one of the members of said yoke being de- 45 tached; and Fig. 7, an edge view of said detached yoke member.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, we have shown at 9 a field-magnet provided at one end with a head-piece 10 and at 50 the opposite end with a pole-piece 11. The head-piece 10 is provided at its top with a to the construction of the field-magnets there laterally-projecting flange 12. The winding 13 of the field-magnet 9 is applied in the usual manner, as shown in Fig. 2.
In Fig. 3 is shown a sectional view of a portion of the yoke 14, provided with a transverse opening, adjacent to which the yoke 14 is provided with a circular shoulder 15, and in the practice of our invention the pole-piece 11, field-magnet 8, and winding 13 are inserted through said opening and the flange 12 brought to bear upon the shoulder 15 and secured thereto by means of bolts or screws 16.
In Figs. 4, 5, 6, and 7 is shown a divided yoke consisting of two side members 17 and 18, each of which members is provided with a semicircular recess 19, as shown in Fig. '7, and a field-magnet 9, head-piece 10, and polepiece 11 are passed between said yoke members, through the recess 19 therein, which are brought into registration upon the adjacent faces of the yoke members 17 and 18, and the flange 12 is secured by means of screws 21 to each of said yoke members 17 and 18.
It is evident that by the construction of the yoke 14 shown in Fig. 3 the magnets and pole-pieces, together with their windingsnnay be readily inserted through the yoke and secured in position in connection therewith, and this may be accomplished without detaching the pole-pieces 11 from the magnets 9 or in any way interfering with or detaching from said magnets the windings 13.
As shown in Figs. 4, 5, 6, and 7, the separate yoke members 17 and 18 may be readily separated by withdrawing the screws 21,which pass through the flanges 12 and through said yoke members, and the magnets, pole-pieces, and windings may be removed from said yoke members in complete assembled condition for repair or other purpose.
By means of our improved construction of the magnets and pole-pieces, forming them preferably integrally, and providing the magnet with the head-block 10 and flange 12, also integral therewith, an article of manufacture for the purpose described is produced which is extremely simple and inexpensive.
It is evident that the elements of our inven tion as hereinbefore set forth may be considerably varied in construction and arrangement and may be applied in a diversity of allied devices and apparatus without departing from the spirit of our invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In an apparatus of the class described, a yoke provided with a transverse opening, and a field-magnet which is connected with said yoke and projects through said opening, substantially as shown and described.
2. In an apparatus of the class described, a yoke provided with a transverse opening, the edges of said yoke about said opening being formed into a shoulder, and a field-magnet provided at one end with a pole-piece and with awinding adjacent said pole-piece, and which is passed through said transverse opening and provided at the end opposite said pole-piece with a flange by means of which it is detachably secured to said shoulder, substantially as shown and described.
3. In an apparatus of the class described, a yoke or frame provided with a transverse opening and a field-magnet provided at one end with a flange by means of which it may be secured in position projecting within said opening and in connection with said yoke, substantially as shown and described.
4:. In an apparatus of the class described, a yoke or frame provided with a transverse opening and a field-magnet provided at one end with a pole-piece, and with means for securing it within said opening, substantially as shown and described.
5. In an apparatus of the class described, a yoke or frame provided with a transverse opening and a field-magnet provided at one end with a pole-piece and with a winding, and means for detachably securing said fieldmagnet in connection with said yoke or frame and within said opening, substantially as shown and described.
6. In an apparatus of the class described, a yoke provided with a transverse opening, a field-magnet provided at one end with a polepiece and with a winding adjacent said polepiece and which is passed within said transverse opening and provided at the end opposite said pole-piece with a flange by means of which it is secured to said yoke, and projecting within said opening, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our invention we have signed our names, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 2d day of August, 1899.
