SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 636,?42, dated. November 14,1855.
Application filed May 23,1898. Sefialllo. 681,526. on model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JASPER N. ARMSTRONG,
of Soldiers Home, in the county of Los An- Body, of which the following is a full, clear,
and exact description or specification, reference being had to the annexed sheet of drawings and to the letters marked thereon.
My invention, which consists of certain new and useful improvements in abdominal bandages to be worn upon the human body, relates to that class of trusses which is used upon the lower abdominal parts of the body to give support thereto in cases of rupture.
On the annexed sheet of drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of my new or improved abdominal bandage, showing the same as laid out flat upon a table or other surface. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of a portion of the human body, showing the abdominal parts and my abdominal bandage as applied thereto.
My new or improved abdominal bandage consists of the front portion A, which is made of cloth or other suitable fabric or flexible material. Two flexible straps B B .are attached to the part A by means of lacing 0, whereby the length of that part of the bandage surrounding the abdomen is or may be adjusted to the size of the person by whom the bandage is to be worn. To the lower part A of the bandage two elastic straps D D are fastened, and the straps are each provided with a loop E at its lower end. The upper ends of the straps D D are attached to the front body part A of the bandage by lacing, as shown more particularly at Fig. 1, for the purpose of enabling the effective length of the straps D D to be from time to time adj usted. When the bandage is applied to the human body, the parts B, formed each with a loop F at its outer end, are passed around the back and attached to the buttons G G, as shown in the drawings. Then each strap D is passed between the legs, one on each side of the penis H, as shown at Fig. 2. Each strap D D then is drawn around the back of the thighs and around to the front of the abdomen, where the loops E fasten to the buttons G on the front part A.
The front A of the bandage is formed with It is explained that the abdominal bandage in being worn is passed around the body below the upper part of the hip-bones in such a way that it does not press upon the hip-bones and that the adjustments are such as to en= able the bandage to be tightened with any degree of pressure or intensity which will give the necessary support to the ruptured parts, which may be evenly supported by la cing cushions or pads at any required points on the interior of the bandage.
In place of using two straps B 'B one broader strap may be substituted for the straps B B.
Having now described the nature of my said invention and the best system, mode, or manner I am at present acquainted with for carrying the same into practical efiect, I desire to observe, in conclusion, that what I consider to be novel and original, and therefore claim as the invention to be secured to me by LettersPatent, is as follows:
1. The abdominal bandage whose body portion consists of a piece of fabric or flexible material at the front, and flexible straps adj ustably connected thereto forming the back of the bandage, the said straps having at the outer ends of each a loop or buttonhole for "fastening to buttons on the front part of the bandage, the central part of the bandage being shaped to admit of the penis passing therethrough, and a flexible and elastic strap on either side of this opening in the lower middle part of the bandage,s'aid straps having laces for adjustment and loops at their outer ends for passing over and connecting to the hooks on the upper front part of the bandage, the said front part of this bandage having eyeleted flaps for receivinga lace in order to adjust substantially as set forth, and shown upon the annexed drawings.
2. The combination of the front abdominal part of the bandage having the penis-opening in the lower central part thereof, the straps with buttonholes at their outer ends and but tons for fastening the same, the adjusting lacing, the elastic straps connected to the lower part of the front portion, the laces for lengthwise adjustment of said elastic straps, the loops at the outer ends thereof, the hooks on the front of the said bandage, the eyeletedflap adjustment at the front of the bandage and the lace adjustment between the front and the back parts of the bandage substantially' as set forth.
In testimony whereof I, the said JASPER N. 10 ARMSTRONG, have hereunto set my hand and seal the 2d day of May, A. D. 1898, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
