UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
JAMEs PRENDEEeAs'r, or LE ROY, NEW YORK.
GAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersPatent No. 635,898, dated October 31, 1899.
Application iileii December 31, 1897. Serial No. 664,964. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES PRENDERGAST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Le Roy, in the county of Genesee and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Games and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to games.
It has for its object to afford entertainment or pastime pure and simple, instructive and interesting, and a diversion from the monotony and worry of life.
\The invention therefore consists of a geographical outline, say, of the'United States, including the States and Territories thereof, or other country especially divided up into sundry subdivisions, wherein the subdivision, State, or county outlines are designated or denoted numerically or otherwise, according to theirl alphabetical order, said numerals, die., being oppositely arranged, and movable points or buttons equal in number to said State, county, or subdivision outlines and bearing corresponding numbers or characters with the aforesaid, all substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred form of carrying out my in vention, Figure l is a view showing a geographical outline of the United States with the State and Territory outlines thereof and numbered movable blocks or disks placed upon said State and Territory outlines. Fig. 2 isa View of the geographical outline of, say, the State of New York with the county outlines thereof. Fig. 3 is a view showing more fully examples of the numbered blocks or disks.
Latitude will be allowed to matters of detail in the embodiment of my invention, as the same may be varied without departing from the spirit or principles of my invention.
A refers to a map or geographical outline of the United States, with its State and Territory outlines marked or numbered according to their alphabetical order-in the present instance from l upward to 49, respectively, this being the total number of States and Territories. In other words, the State'whose ini'- tial is A and its following consonant next in sequence-as, for instance, Alabama-is numbered or designated l, and the next State in alphabetical order, which is Arizona, is numbered or designated 2, and so on. These nuL merals are oppositely arranged upon the States and Territories, so that the same may be readily distinguished and recognized from the opposite sides of the board at which the players sit. For each State and Territory out; line I employ a point or button B and number or designate it accordingly-'L'. c., the button or point bears the number of the State or Territory'it represents or upon which it is placed in playing the game.
In practicing the invention the game may be played in either of two ways, viz: Each player appropriates at a game seven or ten buttons or points as one way, and in the other Way the block-game procedure is fol lowed, wherein each player arms himself With only ve buttons or points, this being the much shorter. Accordingly in pursuance of the first-named code or procedure each player draws from the buttons or points, say, seven or ten and plays the same, one player placing one button or point, say, on the State outline of Alabama, and the other player places a corresponding button upon the adjoining State outlines of Mississippi,Tennessee, Georgia, or Florida, if equal to the task, to compass, if possible, said point. If not, he makes `pastime are provided, instructive and interesting, pure and inviting.
It will be observed that the invention can be practiced in like manner with the county outlines of a State-*am for instance, illustrated in Fig. 2. These maps, embodying my invention, are gotten up/With an enlarged showing of some particular State, Territory, or county upon the back thereof, according IOO to the State, Territory, or county in which it number to said subdivisions and numbered 1o may be used or disposed of. correspondingly therewith, substantially as Having thus fully described my invention, described.
