FRICTION CLUTCH.
(Application filed Apr. 27, 1899.)

INVENTOH WI TNE SSE 8 A TTORNEY NITED STATES PATENT Fries,
JAMES YOCOM, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
FRICTION-CLUTCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 635,835, dated October 31, 1899. Application filed April 27, 1899. Serial No. 714,736. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES YoooM, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Friction Clutches, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to friction-clutches for shafts, pulleys, and the like, and it has reference especially to the modification shown and described in my pending application for Letters Patent of the United States, Serial No. 679,894,, filed May 6,1898, which modification, briefly described, comprises a construction wherein the pulley or rotatable member is mounted on'a sleeve fixed on the shaft and wherein the clamping plates or disks are arranged at the respective ends of said sleeve in a manner to be simultaneously movable toward or from the interposed member through the instrumentality of draw-bolts arranged in said sleeve, as will be hereinafter particularly set forth and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section through a pulley embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section as on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
A represents a drive-shaft, B a sleeve fixed thereon, and C a pulley loosely mounted on said sleeve, so as to be freely revoluble thereon.
D D are two clamping plates or disks arranged upon the shaft and at the respective ends of the sleeve. This sleeve is provided with end heads I), having peripheral teeth or projections 19, that register with corresponding sockets or recesses d in the inner faces of the contiguous disks, so that said disks though rotatable with the sleeve may be slid toward and from the opposing sides of the pulley or interposed member for the purpose of clamping or releasing the latter, as desired. It will be obvious that when the disks are brought forcibly against the pulley the latter will be rigidly connected with the sleeve and shaft, and thereby be positively rotated, and that when the disks are retracted the pulley will be loose.
Extending through perforations b d in the sleeve and disk, respectively, is a series of parallel draw-bolts E, the heads e of which impinge against the outer face of the disk D, while the shanks extend outwardly beyond the disk D. The latter disk is provided on its outer face with an annular flange or projection 01 against which bear shoulders f on suitably-disposed levers F, through slots f in which levers extend the shanks of the drawbolts. The outer or free ends of the levers lie adjacent to the conical end of a slide G on the shaft and are slightly bowed to receive the end of said slide when it is moved toward the pulley. In that case the flange or projection d affords a fulcrum for the levers, which perforce move the opposing disk against the pulley and at the same time draw the bolts in a manner to clamp the other disk against the pulley.
Enciroling the draw-bolts are springs H, which are contained in sockets in the sleeve, so as to bear against the. opposing disks and tend to spread them apart-2'. a, disengaged from the pulley. Hence when the slide is retracted and the inward pressure upon the disks thereby released the springs will retract the disks from the pulley. I
By the foregoing-described construction it will be seen that the draw-bolts are located very near the axis of the shaft, so as to insure a uniform and effective pressure of the disks against the interposed pulley, that the disks are simultaneously actuated to clamp:
or release the pulley, that no lateral movement or adjustment of the pulley obtains or is required, that the balance of the pulley is unimpaired, and finally that very little space on the shaft is occupied by the clamping mechanism.
Manifestly the present invention .is applicable to couplings for shafts, the rotatable member between the disks being in that case a disk or wheel which is connected bya yoke with an adjoining shaft.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination, withashaft, of asleeve fast thereon, a freely-rotatable member mounted on said sleeve, parallel plates or disks arranged at the respective ends of said sleeve and movable toward and from the opposing sides of said member, a series of draw-bolts extending through said sleeve and disks, and mechanism for actuating said draw-bolts,substantially as described.
2, The combination, with a shaft, of a sleeve fast thereon, a freely-rotatable member mounted on said sleeve, parallel plates or disks embracing said sleeve and having a sliding connection therewith, a series of draw-bolts extending through said sleeve and disks, and mechanism for actuating said draw-bolts,substantially as described.
3. The combination, with a shaft, of a sleeve fast thereon provided with toothed end heads, parallel plates or disks at the respective ends of said sleeve provided with notches or recesses registering with the teeth in said heads, a freely-rotatable member mounted on said sleeve intermediate said plates or disks, a series of draw-bolts extending through said sleeve and disks, and mechanism for actuating said draw-bolts, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with a shaft, of a sleeve fast thereon, a pulley rotatably mounted on said sleeve, parallel plates or disks arranged at the respective ends of the sleeve and rotatable thereby, a sliding connection between said sleeve and the plates or disks, draw-bolts extending through said sleeve and disks, and mechanism for actuating said draw-bolts, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES YOOOM.
