Description
Patented Oct. 24, I899.-
UNITED STATES PATENT Fries.
LOUIS KLEMME, JR, OF PITTSFIELD, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JACOB D. HESS, OF SAME PLACE.
CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 635,555, dated October 24, 1899.
Application filed March 29, 18 9 9.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS KLEMME, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsfield, in the county of Pike and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in File-Cases; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention has relation to file-cases, and
' more particularly to that class of cases adapted to be secured to the wall in banks, offices, commercial and public buildings, &c., and adapted to contain, for ready reference, papers, such as bills, letters, 82:0.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which shall be simple of construction, durable in use, and comparatively inexpensive of production, and which may be easily operated.
WVith this object in view the invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my invention, showing it closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing it open. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal view through oneof the partitions and the back piece thereof. Fig. at is a cross-sectional View taken at right angles to Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the partitions removed.
In the drawings, 1 denotes the back of the file-case, which may be of any suitable material and ornamentation.
2 denotes a hood projecting forwardly from the back piece and provided with triangular sides 3.
4: denotes a tray having triangular side pieces 5, corresponding with the triangular pieces 3 of the hood.
6 denotes straps, each of which consists of the vertical pieces a b integral with the diagonal piece d. The vertical pieces a and b are slotted and receive screws or nails 7.
8 denotes hinges for securing the back piece of the tray to the back 1. The tray is divided into compartments by partitions 9, and these partitions are removable, so as to accommodate papers of different widths. This adjustment is effected by forming the bottom of the tray with a dovetailed groove and the Serial No. 710,936. (No model.)
back of the tray with vertical slots. The partitions have projecting downwardly from their lower edges dovetailed lugs 10, which fit into the dovetailed grooves in the bottom of the tray.
13 denotes set-screws that project through slots in the back of the tray and engage the rear ends of the partitions and lock them in position.
The'compa'rtments formed by the partitions may be provided with paper-holders, either in the form of drawers 14 or wire clamps 15.
' When in closed position, the file-holder may be locked in any suitable manner.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of the device will be readily apparent without requiring an extended explanation. The device takes up but little room and is not in the way, it being adapted to be secured to blank places on the wall. It may be constructed of any material, such as wood or stamped metal, and may be ornamented in any desired manner.
It will of course be understood that vari ous changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this in= vention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
A file-case comprising a back provided with a hood, a tray hinged to the lower edge of the back, straps for supporting the tray in a horizontal position, said tray having at its back vertical slots, and at its bottom a transverse dovetailed groove, partitions, each having projecting downwardly from its lower edge a dovetailed projection to engage the dovetailed groove, and set screws extending through the slots in the back of the tray and engaging the rear ends of the partitions, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnessesr LOUIS KLEMME, JR.
Witnesses:
R. J. GRIMEs, JOHN SIEGLE.
