T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOSEPH LAVOIE, a citizen, of the Dominion of Canada, and JEAN FRANCOIS OHAZOTTE, a citizen of the French Republic, both residing in the city and district of Montreal, Province of Quebec, Can ada, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Extension Fire-Ladders; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to extension fire-ladders; and its object is to provide a ladder of this character which is of comparatively light weight and which can be extended to a great length.
A further object is to provide a ladder which is simple in construction, easily and quickly operated, and which can be manufactured at a moderate cost.
To these ends the invention consists in an extension fire-ladder constructed substantially as hereinafter illustrated and described and defined in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure 1 represents a view in elevation of an extension fire-ladder constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view looking from the rear of the ladder. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section thereof. Fig. i is a transverse section on the line at 401: Fig. 3 3 andFig. 5 is a transverse section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3, showing a detail of the construction.
In the drawings, A represents the carriage or wagon body upon which the ladder is supported and which may be of any usual or preferred form and is provided with suitable runninggear. Upon each side of the wagonbody is pivoted an extension a, which is adapted to be swung outwardly at an angle thereto and is provided upon its outer end with pivotedlegs a, adapted to rest upon the ground and brace the Wagon when the ladder is being operated. As shown in Fig. l, the extensions a are adapted to be folded against the sides of the wagon and the legs a folded up and supported upon suitable brackets a in order that they may be out of the way when the wagon is in motion and the ladder not in use. At the rear end of the wagon-body are secured one or more rods (0 which are preferably threaded in suitable sockets and are provided with operating-handles a, by means of which they may be adjusted so as to bear firmly against the ground and prevent the wagon-body from tilting when the ladder is in use.
At a suitable point on the wagon-body is secured a base-plate B, which is provided with i a flange I), having notches b. Within the flange of the base-plate B is rotatably secured a turn-table B by means of a centrally-arranged bolt b and suitable friction-rollers b are interposed between the said base-plate and the turn-table,'as is clearly shown in Fig. 3.
At opposite sides of the turntable B is secured a suitable supporting-standard B in the lower portion of each of which is journaled a crank-shaft b supported in suitable brackets. Upon the end of each of said crankshafts is fixed a notched plate 72 and a pinion b, which pinion meshes with a gear-wheel b fixed upon each end of the shaft 17 journaled in said standards 13". Fixed upon said shaft 6 and located upon the inner sides of the standards B are two pinions If, each of which meshes with two gear-wheels b and b, fixed upon shafts Z9 and 19 journaled in the said standards.
Rotatably mounted upon a rod 61 are two segment-plates D, one adjacent to each of the supporting-standards B and the peripheries of said plates are provided with gear-teeth meshing with the gear-wheels b and b. A plurality of perforations d are provided in each of said plates D, which are adapted to be brought into alinement with a series of perforationsd formed in the standards B A suitable lock-bar O is adapted to be passed through said openings when in alinement for the purpose of locking the said segment-plates in their adjusted position. The lock-bar O is preferably attached to a suitable chain 0, which is secured to one of the standards B and a series of hooks O are secured upon the wagon-body to support said lock-bar when not in use.
To the upper portion of the segment-plates D is'secured the frame E, which supports the ladders F, and journaled in the lower parts of said frame is a shaft e, which is provided upon each end with a suitable cranlphandle e, by means of which the said shaft may be rotated.
Fixed upon the shaft (2 are the pinions 0 which mesh with the gear-wheels c fixed upon the side of the winding-drums c of which there are preferably two, one being fixed upon each end of the shaft 6 journaled in a bracket c, secured to each of the frames E, as is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and Upon the outer sides of each of the said frames E is fixed to the shaft 6 a ratchet-w reel 6*, the teeth of which are adapted to be engaged by a spring-pressed dog c for preventing the backward rotation of the drums 6 as is clearly shown in Fig. 1.
The frames E are provided with a groove c, which forms a guidewa-y for the lower section f of the ladder F and prevents the accidental displacement thereof. Each of the laddersections f is provided upon one face with a tenonf,which is adapted to fit into the groove f formed in the other face of said sections, whereby each section is adapted to slide or telescope one upon the other and at the same time is prevented from accidental displacement. The last section f is formed of a fiat strip and is held within the groove f of the preceding section by means of a lip f" formed thereon, as shown in Fig. 5.
A suitable rope or cable G is wound around the drums c and is passed about a series of pulleys g, secured to the upper and lower portions of each of the ladder-sectionsfand secured to the lower portion of the last laddersection f, as is clearly shown in Fig. 3. It is evident from the above description that by suitably rotating the drums 0 by means of the crank-handles c the ladder-sections f and f may be extended to any desired extent or telescoped upon each other until they all rest upon the frame E, as shown in Fig.
A suitable lock-bar H is pivoted at each end upon the outside of each of the standards B and a downwardly-depending lug 7L, formed upon each side of said lock-bar, is adapted to engage with the notches of the plates Z), and thus prevent the accidental rotation of the shafts If. The central portion of the lockbar is provided with a lug 7L, which is adapted to be engaged by an opening 7L2 in the vertically-arrauged rod 71 which is pivoted upon the turn-table B. A locking-dog is pivoted to the standard B andis adapted to bear upon. the upper side of the lock-bar II to hold the lug 7L firmly in engagement with the notches of the plate I)". A suitable link connects said dog it with the rod h whereby the movement of said rod raises the said dog up out of engagement with the lock-barll at the same time the said lock-bar is released.
A lock-bar H, similar in construction to the lock-bar H, is pivoted to the sides of the standards B near the bottom thereof,'and an outwardly-extending lug 7L5 is formed centrally thereon, which serves as a handle and also to engage the notches Z) of the base-plate, and thus hold the turn-table from accidental r0- tation.
Upon the front portion of the wagon-body is secured a suitable reel J, carrying the hose J, the nozzle of which is secured in any suitable manner to the outer end of the section f of the ladder F, as shown in Fig. 1. The section f of the ladder maybe provided with a suitable guard J if desired, to prevent accident to the firemen. Suitable brace-rods K are secured to the front of the wagon to sustain the weight of the ladders when not in use, as shown in Fig. 1.
Upon reaching the scene of the fire the wagon is drawn up to a convenient point and the braces placed in position. The turn-table is then adjusted so as to bring the ladders in the best position and then locked. The ladders are now properly inclined by turning the crank-handles b and the lock-rod C placed in position. The ladder-sections are then extended by operating the crank-handles 6, carrying with them the hose, and the apparatus is ready for the firemen to ascend.
\Vhile we have herein shown a preferred form of carrying our invention into effect, yet we do not desire to limit ourselves to such preferred details of construction, but claim the right to use any and all modifications thereof which will serve to carry into effect the objects to be attained by this invention in so far as such modifications and changes may fall within the spirit and scope of our said invention.
Ve claim-- 1. The combination with a suitable wagonbody, of a base-plate secured thereon; a turntable rotatably secured upon said base-plate supporting-standards secured to said turntable, a locking-lever pivoted to said standards and adapted to engage notches formed in said basc-plate, for locking the turn-table in its adjusted position; a supporting-frame adjustably pivoted to said supporting-standards; lockingmechanism, substautiallyas described, for locking said frame in its adjusted position; an extensible ladder mounted upon said supporting-frame; and mechanism, substantially as described, mounted upon said supporting-frame, for extending and retracting said ladder, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a suitable wagonbody, of a base-plate secured thereon; a turntable rotatably secured upon said base-plate; supporting standards mounted upon said turn-table; a locking mechanism, substantially as described, for locking the turn-table to the base-plate in its adjusted position; geared segments rotatably mounted in said standards; an operating-lever; a train of gearing connecting said lever with said segments, a locking mechanism substantially as described for retaining said segments in their adjusted position; a supportingframe secured to said segments; an extensible ladder mounted in said frame; and mechanism, sub
