Be itknown that I, CLARENCE GRosEcLosn, of Sylvia, in the county of Reno and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Traction-Wheel, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in traction-wheels for traction-engines, automobiles, harvesting-machines, and the like; and the object is to provide a machine of simple construction and having its blades so arranged as to adapt themselves to the nature of the ground-hard or soft-over which the wheel must travel.
I will describe a traction-wheel embodying my invention and then point out the nove features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a side elevation of a tractionwheel embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, l designates the hub of the wheel, 2 the spokes,'and 3 the rim. It will be noted in Fig. 2 that the spokes 2 are arranged opposite each other and that opposite spokes diverge from their connection with the rim to the hub. Mounted on the hub between the spokes and adapted to have a r'otary rocking motion on the hub is a bladesupporting ring 4, which for convenience in manufacture is preferably made in sections, each section having at one end lugs or exten-- sions 5, engaging over the adjacent end of the other section, and the parts are secured together by means of bolts 6. Having bearings in lugs 7, formed on the inner side of the ring 4, are bearing-rollers 8, which bear upon the hub 1, the hub being provided withY a channel 9 to receive the rollers, and the walls of these channels will prevent movement of the ring backward or lengthwise of the hub. Pivoted between lugs 10 onr the outer side of the ring 4 are arms 11, which at their outer ends have flattened or blade-like portions 12, which extend through openings in the rim 3. The arms 11 are arranged at a tangent relatively to the ring 4, and certain of the arms or the blades thereof are provided with lstop-pins 13 to engage against the inner side of the rim to prevent the blades from moving too far outward, and the blades are provided with a series of holes 14, into either one of which the pins may be placed, thus adjusting the length of movement of the blades. Springs 15 are connected at one end to the lugs 10 and at their outer end to brackets 16, secured to the rim. To adjust the tension of the springs screw-rods 17 are connected to the outer ends of the springs and passed through van opening in the brackets, and a nut 18 engages with the screw-rod. I have shown four springs 15; but it is to be understood that a greater or less number may be employed.
In operation should the wheel travel over hard ground, bridges, or the like the blades 12, engaging with the ground or the like, will be forced inward, causing a rotary movement of the ring 4. Upon reaching soft ground the blades will be moved outward by means of the springs 15, operating upon the ring 4, so that said blades will engage in the ground. By arranging the arms 11 at a tangent, as shown, the bearings formed upon the ring 4 will be at one side of its vertical center line, thus insuring the rotary movement of the ring, as mentioned.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent* 1. A traction wheel, comprising a ring mounted to rotate on the wheel-hub, arms eX- tended from said ring and having blade portions projecting through openings in the wheel-rim, and springs connected at one end to the rino and at the other end to the rim, substantially as specified.

A traction-wheel, comprising a hub and a rim, a ring surroundingthe hub, bearingrollers attached to the ring and bearing upon the hub, arms pivoted to lugs on the outer side of the ring and extended at a tangent relatively to the ring, the arms having portions extended through openings inthe rim, and springs connected at their inner ends to the ring and having adjustable connection at their outer ends with brackets secured to the rim, substantially as specified.
