GEORGE W. COOK, OF MONROE CITY, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HENRY S. BADOLLET, OF VINOENNES, INDIANA.
vEe ETABLE-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 635,1 dated October 1899- Application filed May 21, 1898. Serial No. 681,306. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. COOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monroe City, in the county of Knox and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vegetable-Cutters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to vegetable-cutters, the object of the same being to'provide a sim ple device of this character whereby kraut, apples, and other fruit or vegetables may be readily and quickly sliced into small particles at a minimum expense of power.
The invention consists of an inclined frame having slots in opposite sides thereof, guidebars in said slots, a cutter-frame having laterallyextending lugs or projections thereon which fit within said slots and are provided with openings through which said guide-bars pass, adjustable knives in said cutter-frame,
and means for reciprocating said frame.
The invention also consists in means for adjusting the knives whereby the thickness of the slice cut from the vegetable may be regulated.
t The invention also consists in certain details of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings formingapart of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my device complete. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same with the hopper removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section on the line 00 0c of Fig. 2, the same extending through one of the slots in the side of the main frame. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the cutter-frame and the parts connected thereto. Fig. 5 is a detail vertical longitudinal section showing the inclined notches or sockets in which the knives fit.
Like reference-numerals ind icate like parts in the different views.
The main frame 1 is made up of the two side bars 2 2, having legs 3 1 at their opposite ends, the legs 3 being longer than the legs 4, so that the top surface of the frame is inclined from one end to the other. Extending transversely through the side bars 2 of the frame are elongated slots 5, in which are located the guide-bars 6, the same being secured to the frame at opposite ends of said slot. r
The cutter-frame '7 consists of a plate or board 8, having laterally-extending lugs or projections 9 9 upon opposite sides thereof, which fit within the slots 5 and are themselves formed with openings 10, through which the guide-bars 0 pass. At the rear end of the plate 8 is secured an'upright block 11, having an elongated slot 12 therein, and at the rear end of said block is secured a rod or shaft 13, which is adapted to move longitudinally in suitable bearings in the frame 1.
The cutter-frame 7 is rcciprocated by means of a crank-shaf t 14E,which extends transversely of the frame 1 and is mounted in suitable bearings upon the side bars 2 2 thereof. Upon one end of said crank-shaft is a balance-wheel 15, and upon the other end is an operatinghandle'16. The crank portion of the shaft 1 1 extends through the elongated slot 12 in the block 11 and is provided with an antifriction-roller 17, which is adapted to bear against the side edges of said slot. By turning the shaft 14c in one direction or the other a reciprocatory movement will be imparted to the cutter-frame '7 in a manner readily understood.
Extending through the plate 8 of the cutter-frame is an angularly-arranged opening 18, and the upper surface of said plate adjacent to said opening is formed with inclined or angularly-arranged notches 19, in which fit the cutting- knives 20, 20. These knives are formed with slots 21 at their opposite ends, through which securing-screws 22 pass and by means of which the position of said knives may be adjusted in saidnotches for the purpose of regulating the degree which the cutting edges in said knives project from the upper surface of the plate 8, and consequently the thickness of the slice cut thereby.
Secured to the frame 1 above the cutterframe 7 is a hopper 23, the same being held in place upon the frame 1 by means of secur ing-platcs 24, which are attached to the sides thereof and embrace the side bars 2 2 of the frame 1 and are locked thereto by means of thumb-screws 2'5, and the said hopper is thereby made removable.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
In a vegetable-cutter, a frame comprisinginclined side bars having inclined parallel slots closed at each end and top and bottom, a
hopper resting upon the side bars above said slots, stationary guide-bars located centrally within said slots and extending longitudinally thereof, and an inclined reciprocating cntter- I GEORGE W. COOK.
