EDWARD A. COOPER, OF LANCASTER, NEW YORK, ASSlGNOR TO HMSELF AND J. N. JOHNSON, OF SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 63,478, dated April 2, 1867.
IMPROVED HARNESS SNA?.
@te Sdgchn'le nn'trh is tu Hirst jltltets iitnit 'nn mating ont nt tifs time.
TO ALL WHOM 1T MAY CONCFRN:
Bc it known that I, EDWARD A. COOPER, of Lancaster, in the Stateof New York, (assigner to 'myself` and J. N. JOHNSON) have invented a new and improved Harness Snap; and I do hereby declare that th'e following is :t full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure I is a. perspective View of my improved harness'snap.
Figure II is a longitudinal section; and
Figure III i5 a, Section of the main body of my improved snep, showing the manner in which` the spring is attached thereto. Y
' The natureof thisinvention consists in the manner of securing the spring which retains the thumb-lever in position to the main part or body of the snap hook.
Letters of like mime and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
A represents the main part or body of the snap; Al is the hooi: and A2 the loop formed thereon. B rcpresents the thumb-lever, which is hinged to the main body A by men-ns of the rivet b. This thumb-piece is made hollow upon its inner side, forming a groove of suiicient capacity to retain the spring C therein and to shut Aover :1nd enclose the lug' D.
The spring is secured to the mein body of the snap in the following manner: D reprcsents a lug, which is cast onto the main body A near its base, and projects at right angles, 0r nearly so, from the same, as shown in Fig. III. The spring is placed in its proper position upon the snap, as is also distinctly shown in Fig. IH, and then by one blow of a hummer the lug D is bent over and on to the end of the spring, holding thei'sanie firmly in place. The thumb-lever B is then fitted on and hinged to the main 'part of the snap in a common manner.
As a modification of my invention, the lug D, instead of being cast on to the main body of the snap at an angle thereto, ns shown in Fig. HI, may be formed by sawing a slot into the main part A large enough to admit the end of the spring C, and then a slight blow of. the hammer presses the lug so formed on to the spring and holds it firmly in place.
What I cla-iin as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Securing the spring C to the main body of the harness snap by means of the lug D, the thumb-lever or tongue B being made so as to shut over and enclose the lug, in the manner substantially as herein described.
EDWARD A. COOPER.
