WATER-FILTER.
SPECIFICATION formingpartof Letters Patent No. 634,714, dated October 10, 1899.
Application filed April 26, 1899; Serial No. 714,488. (No model.)

Be it known that we, ERNEST ARMSTRONG, residing in the vcityand county of Camden, State of New Jersey, and J AMES J. MULCON- ROY, residingin the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, citizens of the United States, have invented a new and usef ul Improvement in Water-Filters, which improvement is fully set forth in the following 1o specification and accompanying drawings.
Our invention consists of an improved construction of a water-filter, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Figure l represents, on an enlarged scale, a
sectional view of the filter, the section being taken on line a; o3, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 represents a section on line y y, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation of the scraping or cleanzo ing device employed, the same being shown in detached position. y
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the gures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a lilter consisting of a casing B', which is of cylindrical or other shape and provided with the base C', from which leads the valved outlet D. l
E designates a removable top through which 3o passes the tube F', the latter being provided 3 5 filtering block or body which is constructed of filtering material of anysuitable construction, said block tting tightly upon or being secured to the rotatable tube F', so as to be rotated in unison therewith.
4o K designates a washer ofv rubber or similar material located upon the base C' and adapted to support the ltering-blockJ', so that only filtered water will flow through the orifice H'.
' lVe provide means for locking the tube in a fixed position relative to the casing, said means conveniently consisting of a lockingnut L, supported upon the lower portion of engages the upper threaded portion N, to which latter the crank or handle P isadapted to be applied, as will be explained. It will,
. stiff resilient material, on which is supported the scraper R, the latter having the outer portion covered with emery S or-other similar material, which contacts with the outer periphery ofthe filtering block orbody J', as
through the filter around the filtering-block without passing through the tube F'. 1f the valved opening D' be closed, the water will pass through the liltering block or body J and thence through the openings G into the pipe F and out of the orifice H', as indicated by the arrows in Fig. l, the water leaving t the lter through the block or body J in a perfectly pure and filtered condition, as is evident. When it is desired to clean the filter, the nuts L and M are loosened, the crank being provided with the locking-nut M, which '5o filter block or body J connected thereto revolved in the direction of the arrow a, (seen in Fig. 2,) wherefrom it will be seen that the contact of the scraper or cleaning device S with the outer periphery of the filter-'block will effectually remove all the impurities therefrom, which latter can be readily withL drawn through the valved outlet D. The iilter block or bdy J is ordinarily of :naterial of such porosity that when the valved 'opening D' is open the water will not iiow the tube F', the upper portion' of said tube i through the oriiice ll', although it will of course be apparent that the same may be supplied with a valve, ilidosired. After the ilterhas been Cleaned or purified the handle or crank T Can be removed, if desired, the nuts L and M tightened, and the Valved opening D being elosed the Iilter is ready for use again. f y
VHaving thus described our invention, -what we claim asnew, and desire to seen re by Letters Patent, is-
l. Ina iilter, a easing, an upright rotatable tube passing therethrough and projecting' beyond the ends thereof, said tube being elosed at its upper end, open at its lower end and provided with apertures between the ends of the easing, looking-nuts upon the upper and
