SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 634,197', dated October 3, 1899.

T0 all vwhom it may concern.-
Beit known that LMICHAEL MARY BROPHY, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at London, England, have invented a new and useful Improved Cock or Valve, (for which I have applied for a patent in Great Britain, No. 12,162, dated June 10, 1899,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved cock or valve, the valve proper of .which is designed to be opened by an eccentric or cam,
the rod carrying which has a brake arranged in connection with it for preventing the rod carrying the said eccentric after it has been moved to open the valve from being again moved to close the valve under the pressure of the valve against it.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is au elevation, partly in longitudinal section, of a cock or valve constructed according to my invention; and Fig. 2 is a central transverse section of the same.
d is the shell or casing of the valve, having the branch b for the attachment of the inletpipe and the branch c for the attachment of the discharge pipe and provided with an opening on the top (closed by a cap d) for the introduction of the valve into the casing and another opening at the side (closed by the cap e) for the introduction of the spindle carrying the cam.
fis the partition in the casing between the inlet and discharge ends of the cock and having the opening g formed in it, and h is the valve, which is arranged to close the said opening, the said valve, as shown, having a packingring i located in a recess therein and resting upon a seat j, introduced into the opening g. The said valve is also provided with guiding-feathers la, which Work through the aperture g, and with an upward tubular shank l, which works upon a guide-pin m on the cap d.
fn is a spring which surrounds the stem Z and serves to constantly tend to press the valve onto its seat.
o is the cam, by means of which the valve is raised from its seat. This cam, as shown, is formed by a iiat surface upon one end of a spindle p, which passes through the cap e, and has at its outer end a lever q, by means of which the said spindle p can be moved to sam No. 721,592. (No man.)
lift the valve, the said lever having at its lower end a horn r, adapted to impin ge against a stop s on' the casing d for arresting the movement of the lever when the valve is in its closed position.J The brake which I use in conjunction with this spindle p comprises a collar t, having formed in one face a channel for receiving a ring u of suitable packing material, such as asbestos, which is also in contact with a rib fu on the casing ofthe cock.
w is a spring-which surroundsthe spindle p and presses against the collar t with suicient force to press the packing-ring u into frictional contact with the rib o to produce the required brake action upon the spindle p. The said ring u also serves as a packing to prevent the escape of liquidaround thespindle p.
y With the construction hereinbefore described it will be obvious that the movement of the lever q in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 1, will cause the cam 0 to come into contact with the bottom of the portion la of the valve and lift the said valve to allow the fluid to flow through the opening g, the pressure of the Huid upon the valve and which tends to press the valve onto its seat and so move back the cam to its original position being counteracted by the friction between the ring u and the rib o.
Having now particularly described and asf certained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is- 1. .The combination with the valve-casing, provided with a valve-seat, and a valve engaging said seat, of a spindle provided with an eccentric portion for raising said valve off of its seat, said spindle being provided with a brake-flange provided with an annular packing-recess,and a spring surrounding said spindle in rear of said brake-flange for pressing said iiange toward a stationary` part of the valve-casing,wherby the spindle will be held in any position to which it is moved by means of said brake-flange and spring, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a valve casing provided with a valve-seat, a cap above said valve-seat provided with a guiding-pin, a valve on said seat having a hollow stem engaging said pin, and a portion extending below said seat, a spring holding said valve normally on its seat, a spindle extending into said easing and provided with a cani portion for engaging said valve and raising it oli of its seat, said spindle being provided with a brake-Bange having an annular packing-recess, a packing-ring in said recess adapted to engagea stationary part of the casing, a spring surrounding said spindle in rear of said brakeiiange for forcing said packing-ring against the said stationary part of the casing, an operating-lever secured to said spindle and provided With a transversely-extending arin and a stop on the valvecasing in the path of said arm, substantially as described.
3. The combination with the valve-casing provided with a valve-seat, a valve on said seat provided with a guidingstem, a guide engaging said stein, a spring holding said valve normally on its seat, said valve having 2o MICHAEL MARY BROPHY.
