UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LAWRENCE J. KLEMM, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
APPARATUS FOR .RINGYING cones.
SPEGiFIGATION' forming part of Letters Patent No. 634,005, dated October 3, 1899.
Application filed April 17, 18991 Serial. No. 713,299. (No model.)
To all ZUhOTIb it may concern: I
Be it known that l, LAWRENCE J. KLEMM, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new'and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Ringing Gongs; and I do hereby declare the following-to be atull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved apparatus for ringing gongs upon street-railway and other cars; and it consists in the certain details of construction and combination of parts as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of the front of a street-railway car, showingmy improved apparatus arranged 'in connection with the brake-lever, Fig. 2is a plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail plan view of the apparatus having the gong removed therefrom the better to show the concealed part-s Fig. 4 is a front elevation of thesame, showing the gong in position. Fig, 5 is a sectional detailed view of one of the spring-arms, showing the flexible spring-hinges against which the operating-bar, showing the projections for engagementwith flexible or spring clips.
To construct abell-ringing apparatus in accordance with my invention, I attach tOIlBhB handle .3. of the brake operating lever a sprocket-wheel 4t and connect the samebya suitable-chain to a smaller similar wheel 5,
mounted upon the lower end of a vertical rod 6, mounted in proper bearing and having at its upper; extremity short crank 7. This crank '7 isconnected by a short link 8 to; a bar 9, arrangedlin a horizontal position beneath l the bell or gon'glO'it is desired to operate, and the said rod held and permitted to slide inbearing Formed upon the outer endotthis rod 9 is a projection 21, and at a suitable point some distance away anotherprojection 20, which serves as a means-of engagement M with spring-hinged parts 18, attached to-the spring tapper-arms let. These arms are pivoted to bolts 15, held in bracketslZ, rigidly attached by bolts to the top of the car 1. Connecting these two spring tapper-arms 14 is a spring 17, and the said arms limited in this inward movement by stops 16.
The spring parts above mentioned consist of a downwardly-projecting hinged piece 18, attached to each tapper-arm 14 and limited in its rotatable movement when drawn in one direction to resist the pressure of the projections 20 and 21 while the tappers are drawn away from the gong and to permit the said projections to pass freely beneath upon the return movement of the bar 9. These hingepieces 18 are each provided with a spring to hold the said pieces when at rest in the position shown at Fig. 5 on the drawings.
In operation at each slight movement of the brake lever 3 the motion is transmitted through the sprockets 4t and 5 to give a rotary motion to the small crank 7. This crank mopieces while the same are traveling in the arc of a circle, thereby vibrating the tapper-arms 14, and as the said arms havesufticientspring or flexibility will strike the gong repeatedly "and ateach back-and-forward movement of the operating-bar.
It is obvious that various slight "modi fications may be made in the mechanical details of'my apparatus, without departing from the spirit of theinv'ention Having thusdescribed my invention, I claim-- i I 1. In, combination with a rotatable brake.
lever of a railway-vehicle, a sprocket connected therewith for transmitting'a reciprocating movement to a bar arranged to operate the tappers of a gong, the said bar being mounted in suitable slides and provided with project- 'i-ngportions to engage with flexible attachnients secured to the pivoted tappenarms, .wherebyeach back-and-forward movement of v V I the said bar will vibrate thetappers and strike the gong or hell, as described.
2. An apparatus for ringing gongs, consist 'ing of the sprocket connections 4 and 5, the
vertical crank-bar 6, the operating-bar 9, connested thereto, the projections 20, 21, formed fixed my signature in the presence of two subupon the said bar, the pivoted tappers 14, the scribing Witnesses. spring 17 and stops 16 and the flexible hin ed 7 parts 18, pivoted With spring 19, all arranged RENOE KLEMM' 5 and combined for service, substantially as and Vitnesses:
for the purpose described. JOHN GROETZINGER,
In testimony whereof I have hereunto af- H. E. BECKER.
