No. 623,883. Patented Apr. 25, |899.

. CUSHIONED CAB WHEEL.
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES CHARLES Il.v CAMERON,
PATENT OFFICEo on CHICAGO, 1LL1NoIs.
C USHIQNED oAR-wi-iEEL.
\ I I SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 623,883, dated April 25, 18991,
Application i'lled January 28, 1899. {Serial No. 703,736. (No model.)
To 11H 11271/0171, it many concern/'.-
lie it known that I, CHARLES Il. CAMERON,r
y a citizen of the'Unitcd States, residingat Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Im provementsin Cushioned Car-NVheels; and
`I do declare thc following to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain improvements in cushioned car-wheels, and more particularly to that class of car-wheels having a continuous annular elastic cushion interposed between the rim and the body of the wheel; and the object is to providcasim ple, durable, and `eiiecti ve wheel of this'ch aracter.
To this end the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts of the device, as will be hereinaftermore fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim. Y
In the accompanying drawings the same reference' characters indicate the same parts of the invention. z a
Figure 1 is a'perspective-transverse section of a cushioned car-wheelembodying my improvenients. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detailsection of thesame. Y
l denotes the hub, and 2 the body portion of the Wheel, the periphery of which-terminates in an annular concentric Iiange 3,the inner face of which is arranged diagonal to the plane of the wheel and at an approximate right angle to the contiguous faceof. a corresponding flangel on the concentric disk plate 5, which encompasses the hub\and' is removably secured to the corresponding body, por' tion 2 by means of the bolts 6 and jam-nut 7.
S denotes the rim, and its inner face is formed with an annular rib 9, which is approximately right angular in cross-section, so
that its diagonal faces will lie` parallelwit-h the opposed faces of the ` flanges 3 and 4.
10denotes the. elastic cushion, which con-v sists of an annular rubber, ring vinterposed between the rib 9 and theianges 3 4in such a manner that there willAbe an'expansionspace e formed between the bend in the 'cushz ion and ,thc meeting edges of the flanges 3 `current to the rail is provided through the cushioned wheel.
'This construction of the wheel and rim and the manner of inserting the cushionnot only conduce to the `alastic or cushioning properties of the wheel, but also prolong the life of the cushion, as itis allowed to expand equally inv opposite directions, outwardly between 'the outer edges of the iianges 3 andtand the rim and inwardly into the expansion-space e, whereas if there were no expansion-space provided the central portion of the cushion would be compressed to such a degree as to crush the life out of it and kill its elastic properties. Anotherimportant advantage of this space e is that it prevents the cushion from pinching between the meeting edges of the contiguous concentric flanges when allel disks together by means of the bolts.
The accompanying drawings show my invention in the best form noW`knoWn to me; but many changes in the details may be made Within the skill of a good mechanic Without departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth'in the claim at the end of thisspeciassembling the Wheel and bringing the parthe bodyportion 2, formed with the annular diagonal ilange 3, the concentric disk plate 5, formed with the corresponding annular diagonal meeting flange 4l, the continuous annular cushion 10, interposed betweenthe plane meeting faces of the rib 9 and the piane In testimony whereof I have hereunto set meeting faces of the fianges 3 4, and the C- my hand in presence of two subscribing witshaped resilient conductor-bond, seated in nesses.
said cushion and having its free ends in eon- CIIARLES II. CAMERON. tact with the body portion and the rim of the Witnesses;
wheel respectively, substantially as and for I. R. GIRLIN,
the purpose set forth. OLIVER P. IIUBBARD.
