COT.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 623,814, dated April 25, 1899.
Application filed July 8,1898. Serial No. 685,397. (No model.)
To all) whom it may concern.-
Be it known that l, ANsoN J. OLDs, a citizen of the United States, residing at aveland, in the county of Brevard and State of Florida, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cots, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in folding cots, and aims to provide a cot so constructed as to be readily collapsed into a small compass for storage and transportation and capable of a variety of adjustments for different purposes.
The invention consists in certain novel features illustrated in the accompanying drawings an d hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings just mentioned, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device arranged as a sleeping-cot. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the device arranged for use as a settee. Fig. 3 is across-sectional view of the cot. Fig. Ais an end view showing the device Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the manner of adapting the device for use as a chair or short settee. Fig.
6 is a detail view of the joint or fastening for the side rail and the leg. Fig. 7 is a detail view of the tension side rail, and Fig. 8 is a detail view of one of the end rails.
In carrying out my invention I employ the supports or legs A, each of which is composed of two folding members B, pivoted together at their points of intersection, as shown at O. The front pivot C is a fixed point, but the rear pivot is formed by a pin D, projecting through a longitudinal slot E in the opposing member of the leg and adapted to slide therein. A latch F is hung on this pin D and is adapted to engage a lug or catch G on the leg to lock the legs in certain adjustments of the device. In the upper ends of the legs I form the slots or notches H and on the legs, near the ends of the same, I pivot the loops or bails I, as shown. The side railsJextend between the legs A A and are provided at their ends with the transverse grooves J, whereby they may be fitted in the notches H, so as to prevent their longitudinal movement and consequent collapsing of thecot while in use. The rails are held in engagement with the legs by the bails I being swung up and over the ends of the rails and legs, as clearly shown. A side tension-rail K is extended between the legs and is held thereto by having its ends slotted, as at L, and engaged over pins or lugs M on the legs. A latch N may be provided to lock the tension-rail in position. Over the frame thus constructed I pass an endless covering 0 of canvas and one edge of the covering is turned over on itself, as shown at P, a block Q being -inserted under the fold and rested on the side rail, so as to raise the fold and increase thetension thereon, thereby forming a pillow. End. rails R are inserted transversely between the side rails, so as to act as braces and exert the desired tension on the canvas. These end rails are provided with a series of notches S in their ends, so that by engaging one or another of the notches on the side rails the tension on the canvas will be varied, and it may be drawn more or less taut to suit the tastes of the user or to compensate for the stretching of'the same.
If it be desired to use the device as a settee, the end rails and the pillow-block Q are removed, after which the legs are partly folded, so as to bring the latch F down low enough to engage the'lu g G, and thereby hold the legs against further folding. The device will then present a very comfort-able settee, as will be readily understood on reference to Fig. 2.
If it be desired to convert the device into a sleeping-tent,the several parts are arranged, as shown in Fig. 2, for a settee, except that the side tension-rail is dropped so as to practicallyrest on the lower ends of the legs. The tension on the canvas is thus changed, so as to draw its upper portion taut, or nearly so, and leave sufficient room between the upper and lower plies for a sleeping person, as will be readily understood on reference to Fig. 4:.
If a short settee or camp-chair is desired, the side rails are disengaged from the legs and the endrails substituted therefor, the said end rails being provided with grooves T to engage the notches in the upper ends of the legs and with notches or open-ended slots U, adapted to be engaged by the locking-bails.
It will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, that I have provided a cot which may be readily set up or taken apart an d will therefore commend itself to camping parties or marching armies. No nails or other permanent fastenings are needed, and the device may be easily converted into a settee or sleeping-tent. \Vhen camp is broken or for any other reason the cot is 10 be removed, it can be quickly dismembered and packed into a small space.
\Vhile I have shown the tension-rail in all the figures, it will be readily understood that it may be dispensed with when the device is used as a cot or as a settee. I prefer, however, to use it on the cot, as a space is thereby provided between the upper and lower parts of the same which may be utilized for the storage of clothes and small articles, a feature specially advantageous in camp life.
The canvas covering resembles a bag open at both ends, so that it maybe readily slipped on and off the frame.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A folding cot com prisinga frame, an endless covering surrounding the frame and having one edge turned over on itself, and a pillow-block inserted under the fold and resting on the side of the frame.
2. A folding cot having its supporting-legs formed of folding members pivoted together, one of said members being provided with a longitudinal slot and a lug or catch adjacent to the slot and the other member having a pivot extended through the said slot and carrying a latch adapted to engage the catch on the slotted member.
The combination of the foldable legs, the side rails extending between the legs, a longitudinal tension-rail held upon the legs, and an endless covering passed around the side rails and the tension-rails.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ANSON J. OLDS.
