GEORGE MCOADDEN, OF ST. CLOUD, MINNESOTA.
LABEL-AFFIIXER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 623,330, dated April 18, 1899.
Application filed February 26, 1898. Serial No. 671,836! We model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE MCCADDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Cloud, in the county of Stearns and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Label-Afiixers, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in automatic label-aifixers, and has for its object to provide a simple, cheap, light, easily-manipulated, but strong and durable device which at one-motion cuts off the label, affixes it to the desired object, and brings another into place ready for the next stroke. This object I accomplish in the manner and by the means hereinafter fully described in detail, and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like reference-letters indicate like parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of my invention, partly cut away. Fig. 3 is a detail View of two cutters. Fig. 4 is a detail view of feedroller and spring in section. Fig. 5 is a detail view of ring and end of feed-shaft.
My invention consists of a box or body A of any suitable material, preferably aluminium, cast in one piece and closed at the top, front, and two sides, leaving the bottom and rear open. Arms B of any suitable material, preferably aluminium, are arranged one on each side of said body A and adapted to slide up and down. The tops of the arms B are connected by the yoke O, made integral with said arms 13, and from the center of which yoke O rises a hollow handle D, and in said hollow handle D a spiral spring d is placed. A guiding-rod a is secured to the top of the body A and extending through the center of the yoke 0 into the handle I).
On each side of the body A, near the top, are guides a, secured to the bodyA or made integral therewith, between which guides to the arms B move. On each side of the body A, near the bottom and toward the rear, an arm E has one end pivotally secured. The arms E normally extend diagonally upward and are connected with the free ends of the arms 13 by means of screws or other suitable devices working in the slots 6 in the arms E.
inclined at'such an angle to the surface on which the body A rests that when pressed down its face rests flat upon the label.
The front of the body A, near the bottom, is cut away to receive the lower cutter I, and just above where the front is so cut away a slot 2', running diagonally, is cut. The lower cutter I is formed of a plate bent at right angles and secured by the lower part to the body A by screws or other suitable devices, the upper part forming a diagonally-inclined shelf 4." just under the slot '5, at the outer edge of which shelf 91'' is the cutting edge.
Inside of each side of the body A and at a suitable distance from the top is a small groove (1?, running from the rear to the center of said side, where it ends in a small hole. A roller J, adapted to have the strip containing the labels or other matter rolled on it, is mounted on a spring-axle, the ends of which are pointed and may be slightly compressed. The pointed ends of the axle of the roller J being inserted in the grooves a a slight pressure will cause them to pass along said grooves a to the holes at the ends of said grooves a Below said roller J is another roller K, consisting of soft india-rubber drawn over a metal sleeve. The roller K is the feed-roller and is mounted on a shaft L, to which it is keyed, and one end of which shaft L is-journaled in the side of the body A and extends beyond it and is providedwith a small wheel or other means by which the roller K may be revolved by hand. The other end of said shaft L is journaled in the side of the body A. A circular recess M is cut in the outside of the side of the body A around the end of IOO a paste-pot at the bottom of said frame carrying a paste-roller, a ring having a pin on its outer face and recesses in its interior face, pieces of spring-steel secured at one end in said recesses and pressing at the other end in a positive direction on the shaft carrying the feed-roller, a forked handle astride said frame and provided at the end of one of its forks with a slot adapted to engage said pin, arms pivotally secured at one end to the sides of said frame and at the other to the cutter an d foot, said arms provided withslot-s in which screws in the ends of the handleforks move, substantially as shown and described.
7. An automatic label-affixer, consisting of a hollow wedge-shaped box; a label-roller mounted on an endwise-compressible axle journaled in said box; a feed-roller on a shaft journalcd at one end in said box and at the other in a steel ring; a spring secured to the front of said box and resting on said feedroller; a paste-pot covered over in front fitting in the bottom of said box; a pasteroller journaled in saidpaste-pot; a steel ring fitting in the side of said box; said ring having on its outer surface a pin and in its interior surface recesses pieces of springsteel secured at one end in said recesses and hearing at the other end in a positive direction on the feed-roller shaft; a hollow handle mounted on a forked arm; a spring in said hollow handle; a guiding-rod secured to the top of said box and adapted to enter said handle a forked arm adapted to slide up and down the sides of said box, one fork of said arm provided with a slot adapted to receive the pin on said ring; a slotted sleeve secured to said fork and adapted to partially close said slot, a lever fulcrumed near the top of said fork; a rod connecting said sleeve and the short arm of said lever; arms pivotally secured at one end to the sides of said box near the bottom and having their other ends connected by a yoke, said arms provided with slots in which screws secured in the ends of said forks work; a cutter and foot adj ustably secured to said yoke; a cutter secured to the front of said box inclined diagonally upward, and a guide secured to said box and resting against the bottom of said feed-roll, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereto affix my sig* nature in the presence of two witnesses.
