NlTED STATES DORR HIRAM JAMES, OF ALBANY, OREGON.
SHADE-TRIMMER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 623,021, dated April 1 1, 1899.
Application filed March 8, 1898- and the object is to provide a simple and ef fective device for accurately performing this work.
To this end the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the device, as hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The accompanying drawings show my invention in the best form now known to me; but many changes in the details might be made within the skill of a good mechanic without departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth in the claims at the end of this specification.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in the invention.
Figure 1 isafront elevation of myimproved Fig. 2 is a top plan View. Fig. 3 is an end elevation. Fig.4 is a detail View.
1 denotes the rectangular base, 2 2 parallel arms fixed to said base, and 3 a shaft journaled in the outer end of said arms.
4 and 5 denote the lower parallel feed-rollers fixed on said shaft, and the outer face of the roller 5 is provided with a circular concentric knife 6, the cutting edge of which extends beyond the perimeter of the roller 5.
7 represents a frame f ulcrumed in the brackets 8 '8, fixed to the top face of the base 1, and 9 denotes a shaft journaled in said frame vertically parallel with the shaft 3, and 10 and 12 denote pressure-rollers fixed on said shaft 9 and alined with the rollers 4 and 5 on the shaft 3.
13 denotes a spiral spring encompassing the inner end of the shaft 9 between the roller 10 and the end of the frame, and 14 denotes a circular knife fixed to the outer face of the Serial No- 673,126. (No model.)
frame 7 for conveniently separating the rollers 10 12 and 4 5 when necessary to insert the shade between them.
19 denotes a longitudinal dovetailed groove extending the entire length of the front face of the base, and 20 21 denote correspondinglyformed blocks longitudinally sliding in said groove, and the back of each block is provided with a leaf-spring 22, which presses against the bottom of the groove to adjustably secure the blocks by friction at whatever point to which they may be adjusted.
23 23 represent brackets fixed one to each block to receive the ends of the shade-roller, (not shown,) the bracket 23 receiving the spring end.
24 denotes an inch-scale fixed on the face of the base to graduate the adjustment of the bracket 23.
25 denotes a fixed standard rising from the base 1, and it is provided with a slot 26 to receive one end of the shade-roller, while 27 represents an adjustable standard provided with an orifice 28 to receive the other or spring end of the roller. This standard 27 is formed with an integral arm 29, which extends downward below the base and terminates in a jaw 30 to receive the thumb-screw 31, so that the said standard may be longitudinally adjusted to receive rollers of different lengths. V
In the practical application of the trimmer the pressure-rollers are raised,as above stated, and the brackets 23 23 adjusted to receive the shade-roller on which the shade to be trimmed is rolled and both brackets simultaneously adjusted, so that the proper margin to be trimmed off of the shade projects beyond the knives, and the curtain is then drawn forward, the pressure-rollers causing the knives to revolve and sever the projecting strip from the body of the shade. The shade is then rewound on the spring-roller and removed from the brackets 23 23 and inserted in the standards 25 27, so as to conveniently secure the roller While the surplus end of the roller is cut off, the outer face of the standard 25 acting as a gage for the saw.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,
1. The combination in a shade-trimmer, of the base 1, the fixed rollers 1 and 5, the vertically and longitudinally adjustable rollers 10 and 12, the circular knives 6 and 14 fixed to the faces of the rollers 5 and 12 and the adjustable brackets 23, 23 arranged on opposite'sides of said knives, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, in a shade-trimmer, of the base 1, formed with the longitudinal dovetail groove 19, the fixed rollers 4L and 5, the adjustable rollers 10 and 12, the circular knives 6 and 4 fixed to the rollers 5 and 12, the V- shaped blocks 20, 21, longitudinally adjustable in said groove, the pressure- springs 22, 22, and the brackets 23, 23' fixed to said blocks, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination, ina shade-trimmer, of the base 1, formed with the longitudinal dovetail groove 19, the fixed rollers l and 5, the adjustable rollers 10 and 12, the circular knives 6 and 4 fixed to the rollers 5, and 12, the'V- shaped blocks 20, 21, longitudinally adjustable in said groove, the pressuresprings 22, 22, the brackets 23, 23, fixed to said blocks, the fixed standard 25, and the adjustable standard 27, secured to said base, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DORR HIRAM JAMES.
