Be it known that I, SAMUEL B. WAIT, of Mariners Harbor, (Staten Island,) in the county of Richmond, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful improvement in Propelling Vessels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilledin the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specii'icatioinin which-. l t

The object of this invention is to provide a new manner of propelling vessels, employing the oar principleV at the stern of a ship, said oars being moved in such a manner by machinery that the full power of each stroke is utilized. The invention consists insecuring to an oscillating upright shaft, which is secured at the stern of a vessel in front of vthe rudder, a horizontal sleeve, wherein a horizontal shaft is held. From a maehineinside of the vessel, an oscillating motion is imparted to this horizontal shaft,-and thus the same receives a double oscillating motion, once around its own axis, and then-around the airis of the vertical-shaft. To the horizontal shaft, near its ends, are secured metal or other plates, which act as oars or paddles,andwhich, by'reasonof the motion of the horizontal shaft, are turned up and down alternately, they standing up when the stroke is to be niade, and lying flat when they return to begin a new stroke. Thus this arrangement, by very simple machinery,
can eifectually use the whole power of the same for the required purpose. The same Vapparatus may be used for propelling air ships, and the double oscillating motion ofthe horizontal shaft may be employed on differentmachinery. shall now proceed to describe my device, with reference to the accompanying drawing.

This shaft B is either groovedor hollow, or otherwise so arranged that a vertical reciprocating rod, d, may move therein up and down', receiving its motion from a walking-beam, D, or from any other suitable device. This rod d is either directly or indirectly (that is, by elbow d and rod e) connected with a pin,
f, on a horizontal shaft, E, which Ais heldin a sleeve, g, which is firmly fixed to the upright 'shaft B. By the4 reciprocating motion of 'the rod d, an oscillating motion is given to the shaft E around'its own axis, while Vthe same shaft, being heldin the sleeve y, also oscillates around the axis ofl shaft B, thus receiving a double oscillating motion. Toeach end of shaft E is secured'a paddle, t, which paddles are, by means of the double oscillating motion of the shaft E, moved so as to drive the vessel either forward or backward, as may be desired. To drive the vessel forward,the paddle will stand upright as itis moved back, (see It, iig. 3,) while moving for; ward it lies dat, so as to eut through the water, (see h', fig. 3;) or, in other words, by the oscillating motion around its own axis, each paddle is placed upright as soon as it is, by the oscillating motion around the axis of shaft B, brought as far forward as possible, so as to press with all power against the water during its backward move. The paddle on the opposite end is always in the opposite position, so as not to l'essen the full power of the stroke.
