UNITED STATES PATENT; OFFICE.
CHARLES C. ADAMS, OF CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA.
INTEREST-INDICATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 622,098, dated March 28, 1899.
Application filed October 5, 1898. Serial No. 692,663. (No model.)
To all whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHARLEs C. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charlotte, inthe county of Mecklenburg and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Interest-Indicators, of which thefollowing is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in interest-indicators seeking to provide a simple con struction whereby the depression of a key corresponding to the principal will operate to bring to proper adjustment figures representing the interest upon such principal for a series of periods, so the operator can readily determine at a glance the amount of the interest upon such sum for the desired period.
The invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof, partly broken away. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of the machine.
Figs. 4 and 5 are cross-sections on about lines 4i 4 and 5 5 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 shows a portion of the indicator-roller in side view and in section. Fig. 7 is a side view of a portion of the machine, showing the opposite side from that shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 8 is a detail view showing a portion of one of the rods and the toothed wheel meshed therewith.
The casing may be of any desired form or material, being in the construction shown made with its top having a flat portion at A and an inclined portion A, the former having openings a, which expose the indicatingrolls 13, presently described, and are provided with adjacent suitably-inscribed lists of poriods ranging from days and months up to years, these lists being close to the edge of the opening a to register with the list of amounts upon the indicatingroller exposed through such opening. In the operation of the construction the indicating-roller is properly turned to bring in register with the opening a the list of amounts of interest upon the desired amount for the periods indicated alongside the opening a, the amount of the calculated interest registering with its eorrespending period alongside the opening a. The rollers I! are preferably made polygonal,
having upon their several faces listsof inter est amounts 0, each list being secured to the proper face I) of the roller B, and it is pre ferred to secure the said lists C removably to the roller (it may be by screws C or other suitable manner) to permit. one set of lists C to be removed and another applied. This is useful when it is desired to change the indicator from, say, four per cent, which is the rate calculated in the construction shown, to any other rate, such change only necessitating the removal of one set of lists from the roller 13 and the application of others at the desired rate of interest instead. To avoid any confusion, I usually inscribe on each list at C the rate of interest and the amount upon which interest is calculated to secure the result below, the amount being, say, ten dollarsand the interest four per cent, as will be understood from the accompanying illustration. By the described construction it will be seen that if the roller be turned to bring its interest-listsay, for instance, calculated at ten dollarssuch list will indicate, in connection with the period-list on the case, the amount of interest for any desired period within the range of the indicator.
In order to operate the roller B to secure the desired result, I provide means for turning it variable distances corresponding to the amount upon which interest is desired and so adjust such turning devices that the device corresponding to ten dollars will bring the ten-dollar interest-list into register with the opening a, while the device corresponding to fifteen dollars will bring the fifteen-dollar interestlist into such register, and so on throughout the apparatus. To increase the range'of the machine, I prefer to provide several rollers B and operating devices in con nection therewith; but as the devices used in connection with the several rollers are alike the description of one may answer for all. As shown in the drawings, the roller 13 is provided with a long toothed wheel or roller D,
which is meshed by teeth upon key-rods E, which rise above the inclined portion of the case and are provided with suitable heads or buttons E. The teeth upon these rods E or the extent of their movement, or both, are regulated according to the amount to which the particular key corresponds, the one'dollar key being designed to move the roller B one step that is, to bring its first interest-list into register with the opening athe two-dollar key to bring the second interest-list into such register, and so on; but it should be understood that the specific relation between the interest-lists maybe varied, the object being to turn the roll B by each of its operating-keys the distance necessary to bring the corresponding interest-list into register with the opening a. The key-rods E are suitably guided in bars F and I and at the lower end of the teeth on each bar E, I provide a long tooth E which is struck by a long tooth D on the roller D as such roller is returned to cipher position, such long tooth operating when so returned to push the bar E up out of mesh with the roller D in position to be caught by a spring-latch G, operating on a projection g on the key-rod, such latch G operating as a friction or spring latch to hold the key-rod up and yet permit it to be pressed downward when desired to operate in the manner described.
To accurately adjust the movement of the key-rods, I provide adjustable stops I-I therefor in the form of screws turning through a suitable bearing II, supported in the casing and adapted to be adjusted to accurately stop the key-rods in position to secure a registration of the proper interest-list with the opening a of the case.
In connection with each of the rollers D, I provide a toothed bar I, which meshes with the corresponding roller and is arranged at its lower end for engagement by a bar J, the bar I being preferably provided at its lower end with a roller 1', to be engaged by the bar J. This bar J is a part of the device for returning the rollers to the starting-point and is supported on the swinging arms J, whose shaft J is provided outside the machine with a suitable handle J by which the bar J may be operated to move the toothed bar I up to return the roller B to the starting-point. The bar J extends beneath the several bars I, and it will be understood that as any one of the rollers 13 is operated by any of its keys the toothed bar I by its meshing with the toothed roller I) will be moved downward a distance corresponding to the movement given to said roller D, so the said bar I when moved upward to its starting-point will properly readjust the roller D and its attached roller B to the starting-point.
In connection with the openings a in the case and the period-lists alongside said openin g and the interest-lists on the rollers I prefer to provide a sight-guide for convenience and accuracy in reading the amount. This sight-line consists of a frame K, which extends over the top of the case above the openings a and is provided with a narrow opening K, sufficiently large to expose any one of the registered period-lists and interest-lists. This frame K slides upon the case and is provided with a clamp K for binding it in any position to which it may be set. In this con-- nection the plate K has at one end a depending wing K which hooks at K under a bar L, extending alongside the case, the clampseetions K being pivoted at K to the wing K being meshed with each other at K and having the cams K which in one position of the clamp-sections K bind against the rod L and lock the frame K in such position, while in the other adjustment of the clamp-sections K the cams K are freed from the bar L, and the frame K may be slid readily along the case of the machine.
