i 'Be itknown'thgl, vDAvID O.: BLAIIgof' Abingdon, in the, county of Knox, State ofilllinois, have invented a new andj improved Chu'rn; and I do hereby declare that thc ,following is a full, elear,;`anfli'eicact description v"thereof",which will 'enable oth-ers skilled in the `artlto make and use the same, ireference being had to the accoma'nyinf5drawings, forminga partei' this specicat'iomin `which-L- l Figure 1 represents avertical cross-section of vthe same, taken on a plane indicated bythe line'rex, tig; 2. f Figure isaliorizontal section'ftaken on a'plane` indicated by: the line y y, fig. 1.

. This invention relates to a churn-of fthatclass in-whieh the dasher is Vattached to al vertical shaft, and.. receives la reciprocating rotary motion by certain `devices arranged above. thefcoverfof the churn. And my i improvement consists, first, in thc.. construction oi' those parts by which the dasher-shaft is rovolved, by ivhich thc'- churn is operated in an easy and ecient manner;and which parts are furthermore so .arranged thatsl "slower orfa'ster motion can bef imparted to the dashes-shaft without changing in' the least the motiono'tb'c y lever by which `the whole is operated; second, my improvement consists in the construction and shape of the vertical dashers, which are so ,arranged that the cream is thrownvhemently against the sides of the `churn, i. Athus insuring s thorough and speedy breaking" of -the cream.1
represents acommon churn,'made either of wood or metal, as may be desired. Thedasher-shaft B tits into a step, a,'at the bottom of the ch'urn, fwhile the squared upper end of the said shaft lits into the :socket-4 (l5-um (l,V 1. The drum C hangs on the frame D, which is attached to the churn `by means vof'loops Ilias` seen. A rope, c, is attached to the drum C, and, after Winding around the drum, beth ends of the rope `are passed over pulleys d, and Vthen secred to lthe lever E, the latter'being pivoted tov the 'frame D,'as seen.`
By pressing do'wn one endetl the lever E, the opposite end is raised, whereby one end` of the rope is.V pulled .l from the drum, thereby causing the latterV tol revolve, as the rope Iunwinds from' it,. while the other cndo'f the rope is wound `around the drum,so as to revolve the same in an opposite directionV ,as soon-as the position f the lever is changed. By this arrangement a reciprocating rotary motion is imparted to the dasher-shaft `by a very simple and eilicient device. -It isextremely easy te work this lever, as 'one'liand maypull one end of 'the' lever` np, while the weight of thev body may be used to pushit down again, therebysaving just` one-halt` the power usually needed for the purpose, and thus enabling children and weakpersonsto operate this churn without very great exertion. Itis obvious that the velocity of the dasher-shaft maybe increased or decreased by using,Y respectively,'a smaller'or larger drum. The dashers'F, of whiehany desired numbermaybe attachedito theshaft B, are secured tothe latter by means of pins or rods f, Vas seen; and they are bevelled towards their outer ends, as .seen in iig. 2, so as to cut their wayV through the cream with greater case, and to throw the cream against the sidesot` the churn at an angle which-'approaches nearer to a rig'ht angle thanit would ifthe-g dashers were not bevelled'oli. The speedy breaking of the cream is also aided by the application of the breakers e, whichiare attached to the insideo' the churn, as seen.
I' claim as new, and desire yto secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of `the `lever E, cord c, pulleys d, socketdrum C, and 4dusher-shaft B, with each other, u
and -tvith the frame D, constructed as shown, and operating substantially in the manner herein setyforth."
2. In combination with the above, the vertical dashers F. bevclled towards their outer ends, for lthe purpose described, substantially as specified. A
I DAVIDO. BLAIR.
