To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE M. HUBBARD, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Fastening Devices for Blankets; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-

This invention relates to an improvement in fastening devices especially adapted for horse-blankets to be used in lieu of the buckle and strap as at present most commonly employed. The most desirable fastening consists of a snap-hook and a loop or ring for engagement therewith; but with the ordinary construction of snap-hooks it is difficult to so secure them to the blanket that they will al- Ways be in position convenient for engagement with the loop or ring.

The object of this invention is to construct the inner ends of the snap-hook with a fiat retaining-plate and the loop or ring with a corresponding flat retaining-plate, which plates may be inserted through a slot formed in a leather pad and riveted thereto, the said pad being adapted to be sewed to the surface of the blanket; and it consists in the construction as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claim.

The body A and tongue B of the snap-hook may be of any approved construction. From the rear end of the body a plate 0 projects, said plate being wider than the width of the body and so as to form a shoulder on each side of the body. The under surface of the said plate is preferably below the plane on the under surface of the body B, so as to form a shoulder a, and preferably the plate will be comparatively thin, so as to form a shoulder 19 between the body and the said upper surface. The plate C is inserted through a transverse slot D, out in a pad E, of leather or other suitable material, the said slot corresponding in width to the width of the plate C. When thus inserted, the body of the hook rests upon the forward portion of the pad, and the platev C extends upon the under surface and is secured to the pad by a rivet F, extending 6 through a hole 6, provided for the'purpose in the plate C. The forward edge of the slot rests against the shoulder a and the rear edge against the shoulder b, so that the hook is rigidly held upon the pad. The other memher of the fastening device will preferably consist of a loop or ring G, formed with a plate C, corresponding to the plate C of the snap-hook, and which plate is secured to a pad E, in the manner previously described,

although the snap member of the coupling is equally useful with rings or loops otherwise secured to the blanket.

Instead of forming the shoulders to b be tween the coupling members and their fastening-plates they may be omitted, although pref erably the shoulder b will be retained,as shown in Fig. 5'. By passing the plate through a slot in the strap it is possible to secure the plate with one rivet, so that it will not turn -or swing out of place, and is therefore always in position for use. The pads E E are readily sewed to the blanket in the-usual manner and the plates of the fastening members inserted through the slots and secured to the pads after the pads are attached to the blanket.

I am aware that snap-hooks or similar fastening devices have been formed with extensions from their rear ends,whereby they may be fastened in position, and therefore do not 0 wish to be understood as claiming, broadly, such as my invention; but,

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A fastening device for blankets consisting of a pad formed with a transverse slot and a coupling member comprising a body and a plate extending rearwardly therefrom but wider than the body and so as to form a shoul- 10o der on each side of the body, the said plate lying in a plane below the body and said plate and body forming right-angular shoulders 011 the upper and lower sides of the coupling member to bear upon the 'walls of the slot in the pad, the said plate corresponding in width to the length of said slot in the pad, through which it is passed, so as to bear upon the end surface of the pad and a rivet extending through the pad and plate,whereby they may be connected together after the pad is secured 10 to the blanket, and whereby also the body is held against turning on its pivot, substantially as described.
